Officials are planning to do a complete renovation of the former Border building to outfit it with two retail spaces facing Kercheval Avenue. Additional renovations will focus on establishing space for the health system, including physical therapy and mor
St. John Providence intends to put $5.4 million into the former Borders building if the organization purchases the now vacant space in the Village. The proposal will be decided upon by the City of Grosse Pointe Council May 13. Council members already have the proposed plans for the building, St. John Providence Health System spokeswoman Sara E. Brown said. The intent is to make the building fit into the Village more by making the facade similar in design to others, she said, explaining it would be a more "warm and friendly" feel. Among the proposed plans are two small retail storefronts that will face Kercheval Avenue. One will be about 1,700 square feet and the other about 1,300 square feet, Brown said. The remainder of the 19,800 …

The Village is among the City of Grosse Pointe council's 2012 goals and theater developers have approached officials.
Although there is nothing formal yet, threater developers have approached the City of Grosse Pointe related to trying to locate in the Village. City of Grosse Pointe manager Pete Dame recently told the council about these interests that were expressed to him by more than one developer. While there is nothing permanently in place for such development, there is interest, Dame said. Patch posted a question to readers on Facebook asking for readers opinions about having a movie theatre in the Village. The question elicited responses almost immediatley and generated a lengthy thread of conversation. The question gained 132 likes by Facebook users who follow Grosse Pointe Patch on the social networking site and 99 comments. It elicited similar …

Rising operating expenses, high rent and low traffic contributed to the closing of the burger, fry and shake restaurant that opened only two years ago. The owner, however, is working to get another vendor in the space he converted only that long ago.
It has been about two weeks since Mark Seeley closed the doors of his popular restaurant in the Village: Burger Pointe. The closure happened somewhat quietly, leading to some customers showing up for a meal only to find the doors locked. Seeley, a Grosse Pointer, made the decision after his worst month since opening--September--strictly from a business standpoint. He speaks highly of the overall experience of designing, constructing, opening and operating a restaurant. Ultimately he could not continue pouring money into a business that was not yielding a return on his investment, he said. He loved interacting with customers from behind the counter and loved being "an important part of the Village" and community. He already misses it, he …

^How dramatic... We desperately need this enormous building to be occupied. While it would be great if there were more retail stores, this is a great alternative. Also, Grosse Pointers can blame it on themselves for letting the old retail stores going out of business...clearly they were not supporting them enough.   more ›
