City of Grosse Pointe public safety detectives continue to investigate the nature of the fire and now the third break-in at the collectibles store on Mack Avenue.
City of Grosse Pointe detectives have yet another crime involving Coins and Stamps to investigate after the burned out store was broken into about a week after a fire gutted it. According to a police report recently released, a man hired to clean out the store following the fire discovered it had been burglarized after noticing daylight was shining through from the ceiling early March 13. He had been working at the store the night before until about 6 p.m. and when he returned in the morning, he noticed there were some items in disarray on the floor and two glass cabinets were cracked. City of Grosse Pointe detectives are investigating another break-in and theft at Coins and Stamps on Mack Avenue after an alarm alerted patrol officers to the crime.
City of Grosse Pointe patrol officers responded to a burglar alarm about 2:30 a.m. Feb. 27 at Coins and Stamps to find the front window broken. They searched the store but the burglar had already left the area, according to a report. The owner identified a variety of types of money that were on display were stolen, including one valued at $1,600, and a video surveillance tape showed officers how the crime happened. A man dressed in clothing with Detroit Tigers logo threw a chunk of asphalt through the front window of the store, broke the window and then entered the store. Grosse Pointe Park police have arrested two men they believe broke into Park Pharmacy Dec. 24 and stole the cash register and prescription drugs. During the arrest of one of the men, officers discovered evidence suggesting the man had been involved in other thefts from pharmacies. Andre Betty, 25, of Detroit, has already been arraigned in Grosse Pointe Park Court on felony charges of breaking and entering and larceny of a building. His co-defendent D.W. Scott Peterson, 26, was arrested today and will be arraigned either today or tomorrow. Peterson was a passenger in a car that was stopped today by Detroit Police for a simple traffic offense, Public Safety Director David Hiller said Thursday. St. Clair Shores police began a pursuit of burglary suspects overnight Jan. 3 to 4 that weaved its way through Grosse Pointe Shores and then ended in Grosse Pointe Woods.
St. Clair Shores police are investigating a burglary turned police pursuit that ended with the suspects crashing on Vernier Road and running from the scene. Grosse Pointe Woods and Grosse Pointe Shores police officers were called to assist with the pursuit that happened overnight Jan. 3 to 4 after the burglary suspects did not stop for St. Clair Shores police. Woods Sgt. Raymond Yonkowski said the call his department received stemmed from the pursuit traveling on John Robert Road and within minutes the truck driven by people St. Clair Shores police identified as burglary suspects crashed on Vernier Road near Wendy Lane. Faber and her dogs had just returned from a routine early morning walk that was cut short because of a loose dog wandering in the area. Grosse Pointe Park police arrested a 23-year-old Detroit man this weekend in connection with one of two break-ins at a Kercheval Avenue pharmacy. Jason Alexander Spires is charged with two felonies: breaking and entering a building and larceny. If convicted, Spires faces up to seven years in prison on the breaking and entering count and up to four years in prison on the second count. Spires was arraigned Sunday before City of Grosse Pointe Judge Russell Ethridge. He will appear for a preliminary exam Wednesday in Grosse Pointe Park court, at which time the judge will determine whether there is enough evidence to bind Spires over for trial. It might help if DTE would get off their asses and fix the street lights in the area. Kercheval has been dark for over a month now, the regular DTE street lights are not working. Also out are Lakepointe and Beaconsfield near Kercheval. Nice, dark place for the thieves to work!   more ›

An ID left behind in one of two stolen cars recovered in the 4500 block of Farmbrook in Detroit helped Grosse Pointe Farms police identify a suspect in the crimes. While investigating the theft of a 2008 Grand Prix stolen from the 400 block of McKinley a Grosse Pointe Farms officer found it, and a car stolen from the City of Grosse Pointe Aug. 2, parked behind an abandoned Detroit home. The car was still warm to touch, indicating the officer found it not long after the theif parked it there. The two cars were discovered Aug. 7--just a few hours after the Farms resident reported the Grand Prix stolen. Officers searched the house to see if anyone was inside. Grosse Pointe Woods police are investigating an overnight burglary in the 900 block of Shoreham Road. A man doing work for the homeowners arrived Aug. 6 to work and discovered the burglary. The screen of a back window had been cut and an upstairs bedroom had been ransacked. The worker also discovered a plastic grocery bag in the garage filled with jewelry and other valuables from the bedroom, according to a report. Grosse Pointe Park police are investigating an attempted burglary of a home in the 1000 block of Yorkshire Road. A screen was removed from the home overnight July 31 and there were attempts to pry open the window; however the window was locked and the would-be burglar did not get inside, according to a report. The Grosse Pointe Woods man arrested for breaking into Rivard Boulevard homes earlier this month waived his preliminary exam Thursday in the City of Grosse Pointe court. Zachary J. Court, 19, is charged with first-degree home invasion, possession of methamphetamine, attempting to complete a financial transaction using a device, larceny and habitual offender. Court was arrested July 11 a short time after a resident in the 800 block of Rivard Boulevard called police to report someone had taken his laptop and cell phone from his kitchen table. Police discovered Court walking with a backpack they later discovered was stolen from a neighboring house. Police said the backpack was loaded with the stolen goods. A 19-year-old Grosse Pointe Woods man is being held by the City of Grosse Pointe police awaiting arraignment on charges for breaking into two Rivard Boulevard homes early Monday. Detective Christopher J. Lee said a warrant seeking several charges has been sent to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office. He is awaiting their OK to schedule the teen's arraignment before a judge. The charges include two counts of burglary, receiving stolen property and two counts of possession of controlled substances. A resident in the 800 block of Rivard called police about 5:30 a.m. after waking to his dog barking and finding the front door of his home ajar.
