Grosse Pointe Farms Recognizes Officers, Residents

Several Grosse Pointe Farms Public Safety officers and a few residents received recognition Monday night for their work going above and beyond in their duties during 2012.

Saving a life by administering CPR; catching a purse-snatcher moments after the crime; identifying a man who collapsed while jogging and died; and detective work leading to the arrest of burglars are just a few of the reasons several Grosse Pointe Farms officers were recognized this week. Farms Director of Public Safety Dan Jensen announced the recipients of the 2012 departmental awards before city council to recognize officers for going above and beyond and performing well in stressful situations. Eleven officers and four residents were honored. Public Safety Officer Roger Wierszewski received a commendation for the arrest of a convicted felon armed with two weapons, one of which was loaded, who was driving while intoxicated. The man led …

Grosse Pointe Farms Honors Longest-Serving Volunteer

Grosse Pointe Farms resident Anthony "Tony" Prohownik volunteered with the city as a reserve officer for more than 35 years. He was recognized Monday night before the city council.

Retired Grosse Pointe Farms Reserve Officer Anthony "Tony" Prohownik is the longest serving volunteer the department has ever had. Last summer, at 85, he decided to give up his volunteer role and retire from the Emergency Support Unit. Director of Public Safety Dan Jensen recognized Prohownik this week before the city council for being the "longest-serving volunteer" the department's ever had. The exact number of years is not clear but officials know it was more than 35 years. He was recognized last summer during a meeting with the entire volunteer force, during which he was given a lifelong police badge. He and his wife, Wilma, attended Monday. Liz Vogel to Serve on Grosse Pointe Library Board

The recent Grosse Pointe Farms council candidate received approval from the council this week to be appointed to the library board as the city's representative. She replaces another resident who is moving out the Farms.

Grosse Pointe Farms resident Elizabeth Vogel will complete the term of another resident originally selected to serve on the Grosse Pointe Library Board after the council approved her application Monday. Vogel sought a seat on the Farms council in a special election in Feburary. She lost by 28 votes in an election that had low turnout. She was seeking to fill a vacancy created on the board by the death of Councilman Joe Leonard. After her competitor, Joe Ricci, was announced as the winner, Vogel thanked her supporters on Facebook saying she the defeat wasn't going to stop her. The Grosse Pointe Farms city council will meet; Grosse Pointe Public school teachers will participate in a question and answer session on their proposed contract, which is drawing criticism; and the All-Pointes Daddy-Daughter Dance are this week.

5K by Grosse Pointe North Environmental Club Receives Approval

The Grosse Pointe Woods city council approved a 5K charity race Monday scheduled for April 28.

The Grosse Pointe Woods city council approved a 5K benefit race by Grosse Pointe North's environmental club, S.A.V.E., Monday night with specifications about the operation of the actual event. North's environmental science teacher, Chris Skowronski, petitioned the city for approval, noting the race is intended to raise awareness about fitness, its connection to living healthier and the impact upon the environment. Proceeds from the race will be donated to Children's Hospital of Michigan Foundation specifically to support research of childhood cancer. The race scheduled for April 28 will include a route that starts at the high school, goes along Morningside to Sunningdale and then loops back around and returns to Morningside then to Vernier…

Grosse Pointe Council Approves New Signage

Following brief site plan reviews this week, two businesses in the Village gained approval for new signage.

New signage will be going up in the Village for CVS and the Grosse Pointe Art Center after the City of Grosse Pointe council approved requests this week. In the first request, CVS asked to add several "minute clinic" signs to the front and rear of its building to advertise the availability of such services as the flu shot. Four additional signs will be put up. Some are replacing other signs but some are new to the building. In the second request, council approved a new sign for the Grosse Pointe Art Center that is being custom made out of brightly colored tiles. The sign is in two parts and will adorn the new location at 17118 Kercheval. Additionally, there will be an address portion to the sign. According to the recommendation, the sign …

Lake St. Clair Dredging to Ease Boater Travel

Receding water levels in Lake St. Clair have led officials in the City of Grosse Pointe to hire a company to dredge its marina to help prevent boaters from running aground. City council approved the project Monday.

Dredging of Neff Park Marina beginning in April will help level out the floor of Lake St. Clair to prevent boaters from running aground due to the significantly lower water levels. The dredging project, slated to cost $27,968, gained approval by the City of Grosse Pointe council Monday following the recommendation by the Parks and Recreation Director Christopher Hardenbrook. He explained the project to council, highlighting that the water level in the lake is approximately 20-inches lower than it was last year at this time. The City is not the only marina that will be dredged for similar reasons. Others include Grosse Pointe Woods, Grosse Pointe Yacht Club and therefore by default, Grosse Pointe Shores. The Great Lakes (and Lake St. Clair) have changed levels throughout history. Today's levels are not exceptionally low. Look at the Army Corp of Engineers website. The Lakes were even lower in the 1920s & 30s. Higher in the 1980s. Grosse Pointe Farms Voters Elect Joe Ricci to Council

Longtime Grosse Pointe Farms resident Joe Ricci will serve a partial council term through November 2015 filling a vacancy left by Joe Leonard, who lost a battle with cancer last summer.

In a special election Tuesday, Grosse Pointe Farms voters chose Joe Ricci to serve a partial term to fill a vacant seat on the city council. According to unofficial results released Tuesday night after the polls closed, Ricci won by 28 votes. Ricci said Tuesday night in a telephone interview that he is happy to have won and anxious to get started. Tuesday, he said, dragged by as he waited for polls to close and results to start coming in. He campaigned at Brownell Middle School and city hall during the day, he said, noting the low voter turnout. Unofficial results released Tuesday show Ricci received 499 votes while his competitor, Elizabeth Vogel, earned 471 votes. He received a call from Mayor Jim Farquhar Tuesday night alerting him to …

Grosse Pointe Farms will have a special election; the Grosse Pointe Public School board and several city councils will meet; and the Shores Planning Commission will meet in a closed session regarding a request for one house on Lake Shore.

Here are the highlights of events in the Grosse Pointes this week: 1.
