Marais Restaurant to Feature Outdoor Dining

The new restaurant planned for the corner of St. Clair Street and Kercheval Avenue in the Village recently gained approval of its site plan, its liquor license and special use due to the size exceeding 5,000 square-feet.

The French-inspired restaurant slated to open in the Village, Marais, will feature an outdoor patio at the corner of St. Clair Street and Kercheval Avenue that will be nearly 400 square-feet.  Construction has already been underway on the building. Crews tore off the back facade of the building a few weeks ago, revealing the old "Fischer's" signage painted on the brick.  More construction is ahead after the restaurant owners, Monica and David Gilbert, gained approval of his site plan, which includes a 390 square-foot outdoor dining area. The patio will require some changes to the corner, which currently houses a traffic control box and is well-landscaped with trees and flowers as a pedestrian corridor offering bench seating and flowing …

City of Grosse Pointe Council Denies Variance for St. John Proposal on Former Borders

About a dozen residents spoke Monday to the council, sitting as the Zoning Board of Appeals, most of whom were against the variance sought by St. John Providence Health System for the former Borders building in the Village.

City of Grosse Pointe council denied a variance request Monday by St. John Providence Health System for the former Borders building in the Village in a 5-2 vote. The healthcare system intended to buy the building, renovate and put about $5.4 million into it. The vote drew mass exodus from the standing-room only meeting.  At issue is the amount of devoted retail space in the proposal, which is about 15 percent. The city's zoning ordinance requires 60 percent of buildings to be retail, allowing up to 40 percent as office space. The building at 17141 Kercheval Ave. formerly housed Borders Books, which closed in 2011 amidst bankruptcy proceedings by the now defunct Ann Arbor-based chain. It is 19,800 square-feet. The fact is it is an affordable solution for people and they do a hell of a lot for a lot of people in need of healthcare that has nothing to do with abortions.   more ›
