Parent Talk: Say No to Over-Scheduling, Why Less is More

As the school year kicks off, learning to say no is imperative and recommended by a Defer Elementary teacher and mom.

Less is more. The Italians call it “Il far bel niente”; the beauty of doing nothing. That should be the mantra of a new school year, not only for our kids but for parents as well. Most of us have experienced the feeling of having too much on our plates at one time, and rarely is it a peaceful experience. Not only does having too much on the agenda create stress for parents, but it can affect children just as much, and can even contribute to mental health issues in some circumstances. I often see kids in treatment who are struggling with anxiety or mood disorders. Pep Rally Recognizes All Grosse Pointe Park Little Leaguers

Coaches, league officials and program board members gather to note the accomplishments of the Little League players and parents. The celebration continues with a police escort through the Village for the teams at 9 a.m. on Thursday.

More than 100 parents, baseball players, Grosse Pointe Park officials and others gathered on the fields of Defer Elementary School Wednesday only a couple of hours after the 9-10 team won its final bid to compete in the state title game.  The team's 12-1 win Wednesday allows them to compete for the state title Thursday at 3 p.m. at Johnston Park in Harper Woods. The 11U team earned the state title in Midland Tuesday. Meanwhile, the 12s International Team is gearing up for a trip to Indianapolis to complete in the Great Lakes Regional, where winners of that tournament will advance to the 2011 Little League World Series. Aside from all that, boy did Harper Woods ever put on a great 10u tournament or what? The kids got to go on the field at Comerica Park. Great baseball diamonds for them to play on at Johnston Park and that guy (Pat L) working the grill was a riot! Now lets all just get along and root for the Lions and Wolverines this fall!
