Village Ace Celebrates Grand Opening on Mack

Following a soft opening in January, the owners of Village Ace celebrated their official grand opening Friday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a week's worth of specials.

About six months after purchasing a new building, investing about $500,000 in the renovation and having a soft-opening in January, Village Ace on Mack Avenue is celebrating its grand opening this weekend.  The new location, 18165 Mack Ave., is on the former Lochmoor Chrysler lot. Village Ace moved to Mack Avenue from the Village of Grosse Pointe, where it had been located for years at the corner of Kercheval Avenue and St. Clair Street.   Owners Shelli and Mark Elmer thanked a variety of people who helped in the move including their employees, their attorney, the family from whom they bought the building and more. Dozens of people joined them Friday in celebrating the store's grand opening, which was kicked off with a ribbon-cutting …

I wish Elmer's and Ace the very best. When I enter the store, I recognize the same helpful faces as always. But without those, I wouldn't know I was in the same store. Certainly it isn't the store on Kercheval that my kids corrected me for calling Damman's till the day it closed. This store is too neat and too compartmentalized and too "modern." Perhaps it will take time for the Mack location to …   more ›

Federal Sequester Means No Selfridge Flyover on Tigers' Opening Day

Flights at community events and the 2013 Thunderbirds' season have been canceled, according to the U.S. Air Force.

Detroit Tigers fans can keep their eyes on the field Friday during opening day. That's because Selfridge Air National Guard Base will not be participating this year in the annual flyover at Comerica Park. Potential federal sequester cuts have not only affected the beloved baseball flyover, they have also grounded goodwill flights during community events, including parades, trade shows, F-22 demonstration flights and more for the remainder of the 2013 fiscal year, according to the U.S. Air Force. "Given the current federal budget environment, the Air Force has stopped all aviation support to community events, to include our traditional fly-over of the Tigers' home opener," Technical Sgt. Dan Heaton, 127th Wing spokesman at Selfridge Air …

Grosse Pointers, Stefan and Andre Ahee and Jessica Malouf, are pursuing the American dream with their venture, Brys and Edgewood Cake Co., and have caught the attention of self-made billionaire, Dan Gilbert, through his entrepreneurial program Bizdom.

What began as a Michigan State senior project for business major Stefan Ahee, has become one of the latest entreprenurial ventures sponsored by Detroit billionaire, Dan Gilbert.  Three 2007 Grosse Pointe North graduates and long-time friends, Stefan and Andre Ahee and Jessica Malouf, have hung out their online shingle and are open for business with their company, Brys and Edgewood Cake Company. Brys and Edgewood, or B & E for short, is named for the two streets that the young entrepreneurs grew up on in Grosse Pointe Woods and Grosse Pointe Shores.   B & E has capitalized on a need in a new niche market - creating gourmet fondant cake kits for the amateur, at-home baker.  The kits, which make confections like those seen on the Food …

Do You Support a New Sports Arena in Downtown Detroit?

Leave a comment below to let us know what you think about a proposed development in downtown Detroit that could be the new home of the Detroit Red Wings.

Do you support a new sports arena in downtown Detroit? That’s what Patch wants to know this week after Mike Ilitch announced plans to develop a new district downtown that would include a “multi-purpose events center,” according to HuffPost Detroit. The new development could replace Joe Louis Arena as home to the Detroit Red Wings, the NHL team that Ilitch owns. Olympia Development said the events center alone could create 5,500 jobs and that the entire development would create approximately 8,500 jobs. What do you think? Do you want a new arena downtown? Would it help Detroit? Would it help–or hurt—other communities in southeastern Michigan? Let us know what you think by leaving a comment below.

Sure it sounds like fun. But it also sounds like giving the keys to a brand new Ferrari to a drunken 12 year old with a learning disability. Until Detroit and Wayne Co. are cleaned up I won't support paying for new letterhead, forget the stadium. Besides, last time I checked the Pistons are trying to fill half their seats and the NHL is throwing a temper-tantrum. No thanks.   more ›
