Kindergarten Class Size at Mason, Poupard Under Review

Grosse Pointe Public School officials are monitoring the class sizes of kindergartners at Mason and Poupard elementary schools after seeing a quick increase in enrollment in the last few days.

Grosse Pointe Public School officials have added assistants to the kindergarten classrooms at Mason and Poupard elementaries to help teachers after receiving a sudden push in enrollment, according to information released by District Spokeswoman Rebecca Fannon. The district has long determined staffing based on enrollment, which can change even into the school year. Enrollments completed in the last few days have caused increases to the classroom sizes at both schools, Fannon said via email.  District officials are closely monitoring the classroom sizes at both elementaries and will continue to do so next week as students report for their first day of school. Assistants have been added to both buildings to provide additional support to the …

I think a lot has to do with the "Verification Process" all renters had to go through this summer and the fact that a lot of leases start in August more so than procrastinators. As a renter I had to re-verify our residency earlier than normal this year. I have also seen more houses for lease and sale in my neighborhood which borders the Mason boundaries.   more ›

Residency Meeting Nets Action by Grosse Pointe Schools

The Grosse Pointe Public School administration has taken several steps to more closely monitor residency and ensure eligibility of students following a meeting with a grassroots group that confronted the school board last month.

Grosse Pointe Public Schools Deputy Superintendent of Business Affairs and Operations Chris Fenton has begun work to include some new steps in verifying and monitoring eligibility of students. The efforts are the result of a meeting between district officials and a group calling itself "Residents for Residency," that sprouted up quickly, mainly in Grosse Pointe Shores and into the bordering areas of Grosse Pointe Woods. The group gathered about 1,400 signatures from residents on two petitions seeking better verification of residency by the district. Individuals from the group also spoke for a good portion of the school board meeting last month demanding changes and annual re-enrollment to ensure all students who are actually attending …

GP Schools Superintendent Addresses Residency Concerns

Following discussion regarding residency concerns at last week's school board meeting, Superintendent Tom Harwood shared a letter he wrote to the community addressing the issue.

Residency and enrollment at Grosse Pointe Public Schools has spurred a great deal of discussion among the residents of the five communities. The topic surfaced last week at the school board meeting by a group calling itself "Residents for Residency." Many of those involved are parents of children in the district currently and have concerns that there are many students taking classes in Grosse Pointe who do not actually live in the Pointes or the section of Harper Woods that is part of the district. There was not disagreement at the meeting from board members about wanting only children who are residents of the six communities to attend the schools but there has been some disagreement about how to enforce it. District officials briefly gave…

The data provided by Chris K suggests only that we are descending into a culture of mediocrity. A descent that I for one won't stand for. I propose a multi-faceted approach to the subject. 1) Placement test for transfer students. You read at a third-grade level; back to third grade you go. We will no longer tolerate sloth and ignorance in our fine institutions of learning and culture. 2) Enforce …   more ›

Residency Enforcement to be Addressed by Grosse Pointe Public Schools

Grosse Pointe Public School Board president agrees to include group in strengthening the district's residency requirement for enrollment after they present two petitions and 21 people speak on topic Monday night.

Following a parade of residents--primarily from Grosse Pointe Shores and Woods--sharing their concerns with the Grosse Pointe Public School Board Monday night about what they believe to be a lack of enforcement related to non-residency enrollment, Board President Judy Gafa agreed to set up a meeting. The meeting will happen later this week or next week between district Superintendent Tom Harwood, Assistant Superintendent of Business Administration Chris Fenton and the group, naming themselves "Residents for Residency," which was represented by attorney Joseph Dillon. The group submitted two different signature petitions Monday night, including one that calls for the annual residency check plus restitution by offenders and one that calls …

After reading all of the comments my question is why can't a family from Detroit pay the difference? You have alot of families who reside in Detroit who wants the best education for their child or children. Are they wrong for feeling like their kids deserve a shot at a better education?   more ›
