A fundraiser has been scheduled at Marge's Bar in Grosse Pointe Park for Tuesday, May 21, 2013, to help raise money for Sabrina Gianino's funeral. She is the Grosse Pointe Park woman whose death was ruled a homicide Friday.
Sabrina Gianino was found dead inside a Grosse Pointe Park duplex Thursday and her death was ruled a homicide by strangulation Friday following an autopsy. Now her friends and family are plannnig a fundraiser for her funeral. The fundraiser is Tuesday, May 21, 2013, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Marge's Bar on Mack Avenue in Grosse Pointe Park--just a short distance from Platz Animal Hospital where she was the head receptionist. The Kerby Elementary teacher who wore a hula girl outfit for a half-marathon Saturday as part of a fundraiser for a former teacher's family completed his run in less than two hours.
Fifth grade teacher Pat Brown finished his half-marathon Saturday in less than two hours wearing the student-voted hula girl costume. Kerby Elementary School students organized a fundraiser this month to benefit the family of a former Parcells Middle School teacher, Brian Aulph, who died unexpectedly in Feburary due to complications following heart surgery. The students at Kerby paid at least $1 to vote for the costume Brown would wear during his half-marathon. There were five possibilities and hula girl came in first place with $632. Overall the students raised more than $1,000. Brown completed the half-marathon Saturday in Mt. Clemens with a time of 1:54:46. Five Grosse Pointe South teachers will compete Friday in a dance competition as a fundraiser put on by the student council. This is the second year for the event and is in conjunction with Beaumont Hospital's Day of Dance.
Five Grosse Pointe South High School teachers paired with professional dancers from a studio have been practicing for Friday's dance competition in which a panel of three judges will decide the ultimate winner. This year's Dancing with the South Stars event will benefit Beaumont Hospital's Respite Care for Special Needs Families, said Carrie Halliburton, teacher and class of 2014 advisor. A celebrity judge will also be a part of the three member panel, she said, noting it is Joique Bell, a runningback for the Detroit Lions. The other judges include Prinicipal Matt Outlaw and last year's winner, teacher Mr. Schultz. A crowd of about 200 people gathered Wednesday afternoon outside the Troy Marriott hotel on Big Beaver Road to rally in protest of visiting Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney. The Grosse Pointe Academy's annual Action Auction starts Wednesday night with a "strolling party and silent auction." The academy's spokeswoman Mary Anne Brush shared several pictures with Patch of the auction items. The annual fundraiser aims to raise monies to support academic enrichment at the academy and build funds for tuition scholarships. By Julie Leto, of Poupard Elementary School Poupard Elementary School students helped raise more than $100 through a can drive to benefit the recent victims of the tornado that destroyed many homes in Dexter. Students contributed to the drive for one week and the money will be donated to a victim relief fund. Principal Penny Stocks is to personally deliver the check. The money was raised through contributions by families of Poupard students of returnable pop cans.

Grosse Pointe United Gymnastics team up with gymnasts from Troy Athens and Avondale to raise money for the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute.
Grosse Pointe gymnasts are joining forces with gymnasts from Troy, Troy Athens and Avondale to raise money for a good cause after their coach made it the team's mission to host charity events this season. Avondale High School, Troy and Troy Athens have joined the Grosse Pointe United team to compete in the Flipping for a Cure-Pink Meet Feb. 15. Tickets are $5 and all proceeds will go to the Karmanos Cancer Institute. Each gymnast is honoring a breast cancer victim in the Flip for a Cure meet, which is at 7 p.m. Feb. 15 at Grosse Pointe North High School.
