Grosse Pointe Academy Forensics Team Earns Five First Place Awards

Grosse Pointe Academy 7/8 forensics team competed in this year’s 7/8 Eastside Catholic Forensics League meet held on Saturday, December 8, 2012.

Grosse Pointe Farms - The Grosse Pointe Academy 7/8 forensics team competed in this year’s 7/8 Eastside Catholic Forensics League meet held on Saturday, December 8, 2012, earning a total of five first place awards. Receiving two first place awards and one second place award, respectively, were the duo interpretation teams of Nick Connell and Karina Minanov and Megan McCarren and Hannah Lemanski. Each of these teams also received plaques for second place overall.  Receiving one first place and one second place award was Brad Bixler (drama). Receiving one first place and one third place was RaeAnne Woodman (drama). Grosse Pointe Academy Names Athletes of the Season

Grosse Pointe Academy students named Athletes of the Season which recognizes achievement in multiple areas.

Grosse Pointe Academy middle school students Hannah Lemanski, David Scupholm and Jyen-ai Jones were named Athletes of the Season for the fall of 2012 based on their athletic achievements, leadership abilities, academic performance and citizenship. Seventh grader Hannah Lemanski, a three-year veteran on the cross country team, was co-captain and Most Valuable Runner. Her first place finish in the girls’ race during the GPA cross country invitational on October 11 contributed to the team coming in second place overall. Lemanski is on the high honor roll and citizenship and head of school lists. Eighth grader David Scupholm was co-captain and Team Bulldog for the boys’ tennis team. A two-year veteran of the team, David played at #2 singles. …

St. Paul Forensics Team Shines

Teams from the Grosse Pointe area competed at the annual seventh- and eighth-grade forensic competition at St. Thecla on Dec. 8.

The Grosse Pointe Academy and the St. Paul Catholic School competed in the annual seventh- and eighth-grade forensic competition at St. Thecla Catholic School in Clinton Township on Dec. 8. The St. Paul team claimed the third-place trophy in the eight-team competition, just three points behind second place St. Lawrence. St. Thecla won the event, part of the Eastside Catholic School Forensic League. Other area schools which participate in the league are St. Clare, Star of the Sea, St. Joan, St. Anne, and The Grosse Pointe Academy.

16 Schools in Grosse Pointe Earn Green Status

Michigan Green Schools awarded 16 buildings in the Grosse Pointes the Green School designation for 2012. All of the schools have been recognized for multiple years.

Most schools in the Grosse Pointes are making efforts to be environmentally friendly, according to the recent list of those designated "green" for the 2011/2012 school year by Michigan Green Schools. In Grosse Pointe, most of the public schools earned the status as well as University Liggett School and the Grosse Pointe Academy. The schools must earn at least 10 of 20 possible points to receive the Green School status and are given a level based on their point value. The levels are identified by different shades of green. Points are earned by having a recycling program for bottles, paper and other materials, such as old cell phones and electronics; using alternative energy; incorporating environmentally resposible behavior into curriculum…

Action Auction Starts with Silent Bids

The Grosse Pointe Academy's annual Action Auction begins Wednesday night with the silent auction. There will also be a preview of Saturday's live auction.

The Grosse Pointe Academy's annual Action Auction starts Wednesday night with a "strolling party and silent auction." The academy's spokeswoman Mary Anne Brush shared several pictures with Patch of the auction items. The annual fundraiser aims to raise monies to support academic enrichment at the academy and build funds for tuition scholarships. Tonight's event begins at 6 p.m. and a preview of the live auction items up for bidding Saturday will begin at 8:30 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. Saturday with a strolling hour before guests are seated at 7 p.m. with the show beginning at 7:15 p.m. Bidding will for the live auction will close at 9:30 p.m. For more information about the auction, visit the academy's website.
