National Weather Service Warns of Wind Chill

The coldest airmass of the season is moving in to southeastern Michigan early Tuesday, making for dangerous conditions with low temperatures and high winds.

The National Weather Service is warning residents of southeastern Michigan to use caution outside due to extremely cold temperatures and high winds. The combination of single digit temperatures and lower plus 10 to 20 mile per hour winds creates conditions that are 15 to 20 degrees below zero. The frigid weather is expected to continue early Tuesday when the temperature will remain hovering near zero, according to a wind chill advisory in place until Tuesday afternoon. Temperatures reachig 7 to 12 degrees by Tuesday afternoon. Anyone who must go outside is recommended to wear a hat and gloves in addition to other winter gear to avoid frost bite and hypothermia, according to the advisory issued Monday night.  Not only do people have to use …

To the Pointe . . .

Finding Puppy Love, Again

Believe it or not, our new dog literally walked into my life, thanks to Golden Retriever Rescue of Michigan.

As many of you may have read about two months ago in Grosse Pointe Patch, my sweet golden retriever, Flash, passed away at the end of September as a result of lymphoma. But today I am here to tell you that puppy love lives again and his name is Woody! After going through the loss of Flash, I knew that I would never be able to replace her. She had a mischievous personality laced with unending love that won’t ever be replicated. But I also realized that my life had an incredibly noticeable void. I needed a dog. I went to an event hosted by the Grosse Pointe Animal Adoption Society (GPAAS), a wonderful organization, to see golden retriever-German shepherd mix puppies. I realized then that I want another pure golden, but I didn’t want a puppy…

The Giving Pointe

Girl’s Charity Dog Wash Keeps Giving to Grosse Pointe Animal Agency

Scores of clean pooches plus thousands of dollars in donations equals a winning combination for local nonprofit Grosse Pointe Animal Adoption Society.

At 4 years old, Alex Hughes wanted to do something substantial to help animals. Now, seven years later, her dog wash event at the corner of Bedford and Kercheval in Grosse Pointe Park has become one of the largest sources of private fund-raising for the local nonprofit Grosse Pointe Animal Adoption Society. Founded more than 14 years ago, the Grosse Pointe Animal Adoption Society does not have a sheltering facility but instead places pets with foster families. The noneuthanasia organization finds appropriate homes for indoor animals that have been abandoned, surrendered or found.  Through the growing support of approximately 30 friends, more than 50 dogs have been bathed at a suggested donation of $10 each year for Hughes' dog wash. Last …

Dozens of dogs and their owners turned out Saturday for a walk on Windmill Pointe Drive to help raise money for the Grosse Pointe Animal Adoption Society.

The furry canines of the Grosse Pointes and area turned out Saturday to help raise money for the Grosse Pointe Animal Adoption Society--many of the dogs were adopted through the nonprofit organization that holds adoptions twice a month. Attendees were encouraged to raise funds from friends and family before arriving at the event and those who raised more than $100 received a Paws In the Park tee-shirt.  The money help support the organization by helping to pay for veterinary care and other services for the animals, according to a Paws In the Park press release. The walk began in 1997 and has become an annual event. This year's walk began inside Windmill Pointe Park, spanned the same named roadway and back to the park. Two doggie water …
