Of the many events this week in the Grosse Pointes, here are the highlights: 1. City offices for the Grosse Pointes are closed Monday in observance of President's Day. Rubbish and recycling collection are on-schedule for most of the communities. Rubbish collection in Grosse Pointe Shores is delayed by one day this week but recycling is on-schedule. 2. It was a morning devoted to recognizing the sacrifice and service of Grosse Pointes residents who have worn the uniforms their nation's military services. During the Grosse Pointe War Memorial Veterans Day Breakfast, veterans from World War ll sat elbow to elbow those who have served in Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. The hearty breakfast was enjoyed as Dr. Mark Webber, Grosse Pointe War Memorial President, gave the event's opening remarks and addressed the veterans seated in the audience. More than 60 Grosse Pointers gathered to play in an annual bridge tournament Thursday in Grosse Pointe Memorial Church to benefit the Neighborhood Club.
A tournament that was started in 1988 continues today in memory of its founder, Winifred S. Malchie, who loved the card game bridge. More than 60 women gathered in Grosse Pointe Memorial Church to play in the tournament in groups of four as a benefit fundraiser for the Neighborhood Club. The late Malchie loved the game, which she viewed as a "refined, mind-expanding game," said her daughter, Deane Preston, who also played in Thursday's tournament. Malchie, who taught bridge in a time when there was no shortage of players, wanted nothing more than to get younger players hooked on the game, Preston said. Church is among six suburban settings for Detroit orchestra's 'neighborhood' series.
Top-caliber classical music comes to Grosse Pointe next January through April as the Detroit Symphony Orchestra expands its suburban outreach. Four Sunday afternoon concerts by the full DSO, led by Leonard Slatkin and three guest conductors, will be at Grosse Pointe Memorial Church on Jan. 8, Feb. 5, March 11 and April 29. The last three programs feature violin soloists, including Grammy Award-nominated recording artist Cho-Liang Lin on Feb. 5. Musical selections, conductors and featured performers are listed at the DSO website. Tickets are $25 or $75 for all four evenings.
