Three of the leaders from the local chapters of Young Americans for Freedom organization requested the Rick Santorum assembly/speech be open to parents and to North High School students.
Three students who addressed the Grosse Pointe Public School Board Monday asked that the Grosse Pointe South High School assembly featuring a speech by Rick Santorum later this month be open to parents and Grosse Pointe North High School students. The requests were made during the public comment portion of Monday's meeting, in which the school board and administration heard unified feedback from the majority of the 16 speakers related to the handling of the upcoming assembly. Approximately 16 people spoke Monday to the Grosse Pointe Public School board about planned speaker, Rick Santorum, and the district's decisions regarding his visit--decisions that gained heavy media attention last week. Those who spoke generally had the same message: allow Santorum to speak as an educational opportunity for students, stop making the visit into something political and allow students exposure to a variety of viewpoints. Grosse Pointe Public School Board members received copies of 22 applications Friday related to the vacancy created by Brendan Walsh's immediate resignation late last month.
The 22 candidates who applied to serve on the Grosse Pointe Public School Board will be interviewed in small groups April 23 with the help of the League of Women Voters Grosse Pointe, board president Joan Dindoffer said early Monday. Applications were due Friday by 4 p.m. and Dindoffer said packets of the applications were distributed Friday to all board members. Those who applied are being considered to fill the vacancy on the board created by former trustee, Brendan Walsh, who resigned without notice late last month due to new professional responsibilities. A lawsuit filed against the Grosse Pointe Public School Board accusing them of intentionally not posting a public notice of a meeting in which a teacher was fired seeks a variety of actions. Most recently, the attorneys representing each side filed witness lists that include a variety of school officials, dozens of residents and computer experts. The lawsuit, filed in late September on behalf of Alan Grams , seeks to reverse the decision of the board related to the termination of Stephen Cross. The Grosse Pointe Public School Board has 30 days to replace Brendan Walsh after he unexpectedly resigned from the elected position Thursday. Walsh's immediately effective resignation came the day before the district is on spring break, which elminates approximately 10 of the 30 days. Walsh, who has been on the board since 2005, was the board's treasurer and heavily involved in the budget process. In an announcement he posted on his own website, Walsh credits new professional responsibilities and the achievement of helping the district get to stable financial ground as the reasons for his resignation. Long time Grosse Pointe Public School Board trustee Brendan Walsh is resigning immediatley from the Grosse Pointe Public School board, according to an announcement he posted on his website. His resignation comes a few weeks after the newest contracts with teachers and other unionized employees was approved and ratified. According to his public resignation letter, he is leaving at a point when the district is in a financially sound position as a result of much of the work he did during his time on the board. He began serving on the board in 2005 and sought the position to help the district in a time when it was not on stable financial ground.
