One of Grosse Pointe North High School's science teachers is among the final four being considered for the Michigan Teacher of the Year. The winner will be chosen before the month's end.
Gary Abud is honored and grateful for the opportunity someone has given him to participate in the Michigan Teacher of Year process. He doesn't know who that someone is but he believes the experience has changed they way he thinks about his profession as a science teacher. Abud, 28, is a finalist among four teachers throughout Michigan being considered for the Teacher of the Year award for 2013/14 from the Michigan Department of Education. He teaches physics and chemistry at Grosse Pointe North High School. To even have the opportunity to be considered initially, teachers must be nominated, which is considered and then if the Department of Education believes the teacher is worthy of participation, he or she is invited to apply. Projected enrollment numbers for next school year become an important part of the Grosse Pointe Public School board's discussion to determine staffing and funding, which must be in place by July 1.
Overall enrollment projections for the 2013/14 school year show the largest decline in students at the elementary level--an important factor to be discussed by the Grosse Pointe Public School Board Monday. The district staffs based on enrollment. Generally in May and June, the board determines whether any layoffs of teachers or other staff are necessary as it prepares to approve a budget. According to figures that will be presented to the board Monday, the middle school level is expected to gain about 40 students and the high school level is expected to gain about 8 students. House Bills 4465-4466 were approved in Lansing on Tuesday and await a full House vote.
Two house bills that would eliminate the foreign language requirement for high school students were approved in Lansing on Tuesday in the House Education Committee. Currently, the students in class of 2016 are required to take two years of foreign language to graduate. Grosse Pointe Public Schools recommends to its high schoolers planning to attend a four year college to take three years worth of foreign language, according to the 2013/14 High School Program of Studies. The district offers courses in Chinese, French, Spanish, German, Italian and Latin, according to the same document. The Grosse Pointe Foundation for Public Education recently gifted more than $110,000 in educational grants to the Grosse Pointe Public School district.
Much of $110,334.82 donated to the Grosse Pointe Public Schools by the Grosse Pointe Foundation for Public Education will be used to purchase technology for a variety of classrooms and programs throughout the district. The donations were announced recently before the Grosse Pointe Public School Board by the Foundation's Vice President Christie Scoggin. Each gift was given based on an application submitted by a teacher or administrator on behalf of a specific project. The Grosse Pointe Public School Board unanimously appointed trustee Judy Gafa as its treasurer to fill the position recently vacated by Brendan Walsh.
The Grosse Pointe Public School Board voted unanimously this week to appoint Judy Gafa to serve as the board's treasurer for the remainder of the calendar year. The board needed to select a new treasurer after the unexpected immediate resignation of Brendan Walsh in late March. He had been the board's treasurer for several years. He left amidst the budget planning process for the 2013/14 fiscal year. In a special meeting this week, trustee Dan Roeske nominated Gafa to fill the position. His nomination quickly gained support and a unanimous vote from fellow board members. Trustee Tom Jakubiec said he believed Gafa was a good choice for the position before all the members voted. Grosse Pointe Public Schools Board of Education recently recognized 11 people who volunteer and help in the classroom and beyond, naming them the 2013 Distinguished Volunteers. The individuals each earned a golden apple along with a certificate to recognize their efforts. They were announced during a school board meeting and each posed for a picture with district superintendent Tom Harwood. The Kerby Elementary teacher who wore a hula girl outfit for a half-marathon Saturday as part of a fundraiser for a former teacher's family completed his run in less than two hours.
Fifth grade teacher Pat Brown finished his half-marathon Saturday in less than two hours wearing the student-voted hula girl costume. Kerby Elementary School students organized a fundraiser this month to benefit the family of a former Parcells Middle School teacher, Brian Aulph, who died unexpectedly in Feburary due to complications following heart surgery. The students at Kerby paid at least $1 to vote for the costume Brown would wear during his half-marathon. There were five possibilities and hula girl came in first place with $632. Overall the students raised more than $1,000. Brown completed the half-marathon Saturday in Mt. Clemens with a time of 1:54:46. A Maire Elementary School student is competing at the national level in a Future Chef contest after winning within the Grosse Pointe Public School district and then at regionals. The public determines the winner and voting is open through Tuesday April
Maire Elementary School fourth grader Imran Mihas is competing with four other elementary students from across the country in a cooking competition put on Sodexo. The Future Chef competition required students to create a healthy salad recipe in hopes of focusing on positive food choices. More than 5,000 students nationally participated in the competition, which began within each school district that contracts its food services with Sodexo. The public will determine the winner by voting online. Voting is open through Tuesday April 30. Voting does not require any personal information and takes just a moment. A fifth grade Kerby Elementary School teacher will run a half-marathon Saturday dressed as a hula girl. He will also wear a sign announcing that Kerby students helped raise more than $1,000.
Pat Brown made his first appearance before the Kerby Elementary student body Friday sporting a hula girl outfit complete with a coconut bikini top, a grass skirt and many brightly colored flowers. Beneath the hula girl costume, Brown wore running gear--a tech shirt, running shorts and running shoes. Brown is running a half-marathon early Saturday in Mt. Clemens as part of a schoolwide fundraiser that will benefit the family of late Parcells Middle School teacher Brian Aulph. Aulph, 36, passed away unexpectedly in mid-February due to complications following heart surgery, according to a letter Parcells Principal Cathryn Armstrong sent to parents.
