Park Resident to Fill Grosse Pointe School Board Vacancy

The Grosse Pointe Public School board voted unanimously Wednesday night to appoint Brian C. Summerfield to fill the vacancy created by the immediate resignation of Brendan Walsh.

Brian C. Summerfield will begin reviewing material from the Grosse Pointe Public School System today as the school board's newest member.  Summerfield was one of 22 residents within the district to apply to fill the vacant seat created by the immediate resignation of Brendan Walsh in late March. Summerfield was one of 19 interviewed Tuesday night in a group session. The Grosse Pointe Public School Board voted unanimously Wednesday night to appoint Summerfield to fill the vacancy. Their decision came nearly two hours after a special meeting began with the specific purpose of making a decision.  The board did not have a formal process in place and had to work through how to handle it Wednesday before discussion about the actual candidates …

Congratulations to Brian Summerfield! I am sure that Mr. Summerfield's capabilities are deeper than those suggested by Ms. Gafa. Certainly, I hope that he was selected for reasons beyond being "non-polarizing." The instances where the Board has gotten into trouble have been cases where an advocate unafraid of controversy might have provided the best counsel in avoiding it. Moreover, Brendan Walsh…   more ›

School Officials Compliment South Students

Rick Santorum's speech at Grosse Pointe South High School on Wednesday went well, officials said afterward. Principal Matt Outlaw thanked students for their professional behavior before dismissing them.

The assembly Wednesday featuring former senator and presidential candidate Rick Santorum went smoothly and drew compliments from school officials as well as community members.  Santorum's appearance happened after more than a week of intense scrutiny on the district stemming from what began as questions about the content of his speech and morphed into the cancellation of the event, then reinstatement with an opt-in option requiring students to have permission slips from parents to attend. The handling of the situation drew heavy criticism from the parents of the students who organized the event, Young Americans for Freedom, and district officials who had concerns about school safety. A security plan was established last week with Grosse …

I did watch the live stream of the speech and the question and answer session. For the most part, I found the speech to be, for lack of a better term, harmless. Personally, I thought some of the responses in the Q & A were a bit too political in nature and did veer into an area that was not tied to "leadership," however, I must assume that since this was an "opt in" program, the students in …   more ›

Several Parents Attend Santorum Speech at Grosse Pointe South

Grosse Pointe Public School officials had closed today's assembly featuring Rick Santorum to parents, North students and the public. However, parents were allowed to attend after a late Tuesday night request from one parent.

About a dozen parents—including many who spoke at last week's Grosse Pointe Public School Board meeting criticizing the district's handling of the Rick Santorum speech—attended Wednesday's assembly at South High School.  Their attendance was granted late Tuesday after one parent, Paula Tech, spoke to the Grosse Pointe Public School board. Tuesday's meeting was a special meeting called for the purpose of interviewing candidates who applied to fill a vacancy on the school board.  Tech addressed the board, explaining that regardless of what anyone thinks of the student organization, Young Americans for Freedom, it has provided her son with positive direction in his life. She then told the board she believes parents should still be allowed to …

Grosse Pointe South Student Held Over 'Bomb' Tweet

Grosse Pointe Farms police escorted a South High School student off campus about an hour ago after he sent a Tweet containing the word "bomb" during a Rick Santorum speech.

Grosse Pointe Farms police have escorted one Grosse Pointe South High School student from campus after he used the word "bomb" in a Tweet referencing Rick Santorum, the former presidential candidate who is addressing more than 1,000 students in the gymnasium. The student was not in attendance at the speech but was elsewhere in the building, according to a source closely related to event security. The Tweet said: "Hey Mr. Santorum, can you sign this bomb for me?"  Grosse Pointe Farms Public Safety Director Dan Jensen told Patch a detective inside the high school caught wind of the tweet.  The minor was then taken into custody. Police are now waiting for the student's parents to arrive before speaking to the student. "It definitely doesn't …

The Grosse Pointe Public School Board will make a decision Wednesday April 24, 2013, about which of the candidates will fill the vacancy created by the immediate resignation of Brendan Walsh last month.

Nineteen Grosse Pointe and Harper Woods residents interviewed Tuesday for the opportunity to fulfill a vacancy on the Grosse Pointe Public School board. The final decision about which of those candidates will be selected is scheduled to happen during a special meeting Wednesday, April 24, 2013.  The interviews were conducted in a small groups and moderated by the League of Women Voters Grosse Pointe. The group format was decided upon as a result of the number of applications the board received, which was 22.  Of those 22, one person formally withdrew, one person was unable to attend Tuesday night and another person did not show up for the interview.  School Board President Joan Dindoffer said afterward the decision will be challenging …

Santorum Speech to be Live-Streamed by South TV Production Students

To meet requests of the public, the Grosse Pointe South television production students will record and live-stream Rick Santorum's speech Wednesday. Additionally, an informal reception is being offered after school that will be open to the public.

Grosse Pointe Public School district officials have responded to requests lodged last week to the school board by students and parents to open the upcoming speech by Rick Santorum at Grosse Pointe South High School.  The speech, which is being held during the school day, is not going to be open to the public. It is open to Grosse Pointe South students and staff who wish to attend. Students must have an opt-in permission slip. However, the district has arranged for Santorum to be available for an informal reception that is open to the public after school from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in Grosse Pointe South's gymnasium. "Fairly politically extreme"? Putting aside for the moment that this description doesn't even make sense (you are either "extreme" or you're not, qualifying this superlative adjective with "fairly" is absurd), I don't see the security threat here. The assembly during school hours is open only to students, and the general public will not be able to enter the school. After school hours, the public …   more ›

Santorum Assembly Only Open to South Students

In addition to speaking to Grosse Pointe South High School students during an assembly in the school day, Rick Santorum will also appear at an after school forum that will be open to the public.

Rick Santorum's speech will be open to Grosse Pointe South High School students only, district spokeswoman Rebecca Fannon said late Friday. The event will not be open to parents and/or North High School students, she said. There will be an after school forum, however, with Santorum that will be open to the public, according to information posted by Grosse Pointe Public School trustee Judy Gafa.  During last week's school board meeting, the student leaders of the local chapters of Young Americans for Freedom who are responsible for initiating Santorum's visit requested the district open the assembly to North students and to parents. Santorum's speech is scheduled to happen during the school day in South's gymnasium and the schools are not …

I can see your point Chris K. but if I had said I also liked Mr. Derek Adams (as a relatively new resident and a current educator) then there would have been an outcry that it was "biased" because he was a former teacher. For the record, I did read all 22 applicants and "NO" I do not know nor have I ever met Ms. Allison Baker. I wish the BOE good luck with their decision.   more ›

Students Read Poetry at Chocolate Bar Cafe

Fourth and fifth graders from Ferry Elementary's magnet program read their own poetry at the Chocolate Bar Cafe Friday during an open mic session in which parents were invited to attend.

Fourth and fifth graders from Ferry Elementary took over the Chocolate Bar Cafe Friday as part of a class project in which they read several of the own poems in an open mic forum.  Students in the gallery snapped their fingers to show their support rather than clapping their hands.  The project is one of many organized by Ferry's magnet teacher, James Fisher, who began having his students read their poetry in the opening setting about seven years ago.  It was prompted by students from several years ago who wanted to know what they would do with their finished poetry books, he said.  Chocolate Bar Cafe owner Lisa Corbin said she began hosting the open mic forum for Fisher's class the first year she came to own the ice cream/cake/chocolate/…
