North, South Named to Newsweek's Top High Schools List

Grosse Pointe South was ranked #556 and Grosse Pointe North was ranked #880 in the USA.

Grosse Pointe South was ranked #556 and Grosse Pointe North was ranked #880. For its rankings, Newsweek sent out a survey to more than 5,000 high schools in the U.S., with about 2,500 schools responding in 2013. You can see the details about Grosse Pointe South's and Grosse Pointe North's rankings, and every other ranked high school by clicking on the markers in the interactive map above. Grosse Pointe South Tennis Team Nets Victory at Pioneer

Blue Devils triumph at Ann Arbor Pioneer Invitational Quad.

Grosse Pointe South's girls' varsity tennis team won the Ann Arbor Pioneer Invitational Quad this past weekend against Rochester, Northville and Ann Arbor Pioneer. The Blue Devils finished the tournament with 19 points to finish first. Host Ann Arbor Pioneer was second with 15 points, according to MLive. Parents, coaches and athletic directors may submit photos and results to Grosse Pointe Patch's Pics & Clips.

'It's Free Speech': Grosse Pointe South Students Await Santorum

The Wednesday assembly has been the subject of controversy in recent days at the high school.

Buzz abounded before Rick Santorum’s speech at Grosse Pointe South, as students awaited the controversial appearance. While converging for off-campus lunch break around 11:45 a.m. Wednesday, some teens said they were eager to hear from Santorum.  “I think it’s really cool that he could take the time and talk to us,” said freshman Zora Bowens, 15. “Even though there’s a lot of controversy around it, I’m still interested in hearing what he has to say.” Bowens, whose brother is among the students who helped organize the event, said she particularly was interested in learning about his leadership skills that brought him into the presidential race. Grosse Pointe South Ranks Fourth in Top Michigan Schools

U.S. News lists the high school in the gold metal category for a variety of reasons.

Grosse Pointe South High School is at the head of the class. U.S. News and World Report ranks the school fourth in Michigan and 341 in the nation, listing it in the gold metal category, according to a recently released list. "I am very excited for the honor for the school," South Principal Matt Outlaw told Patch. "To me, it is a representation of our team approach to education. We are blessed with unbelievable support from families and the community.  "Our students come to us ready to learn and are supported by their parents every step of the way. Watch Rick Santorum's Speech from Grosse Pointe South Live

Rick Santorum's speech to the students at Grosse Pointe South High School on Wednesday, April 24, will be streamed live online.

Rick Santorum will speak to Grosse Pointe South students during the school day Wednesday, and thanks to some students from the school's television producton class, everyone can watch it. Santorum's speech to South students will begin at 12:45 p.m. To watch the speech, simply hit the play button in the player above. The event is not open to the public; however, people can meet with Santorum at an informal reception from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in Grosse Pointe South's gymnasium. The livestream is on the GPPS Educational Access Channel 20.

Grosse Pointe South Runners Set Pace at National Meet

Kelsie Schwartz, Ersula Farrow, Haley Meier and Hannah Meier won the 4x1-mile relay at the New Balance Indoor Nationals at Columbia University in New York

Grosse Pointe South athletes Kelsie Schwartz, Ersula Farrow, Haley Meier and Hannah Meier recently won the 4x1-mile relay at the New Balance Indoor Nationals at Columbia University in New York. Their winning time of 20 minutes, 2 seconds was the fastest recorded in the country this year and the third-fastest in history, according to an email from Grosse Pointe South coach Steve Zaranek. The national record is 19:59. Schwartz, Farrow, Haley Meier and Hannah Meier also won the event at the meet last year. They competed as part of the Grosse Pointe Track Club. (When out of season, track and field athletes in Michigan must run for a club or unattached, according to Zaranek.) The four runners, who set the national record in winning the 3200 …

Title Game Comeback Falls Short for Grosse Pointe South

Blue Devils fall to Grand Haven 60-54 in the Class A girls basketball state championship game on Saturday in East Lansing.

Oh so close. The Grosse Pointe South girls basketball team fell agonizingly short of a state championship as the Blue Devils lost 60-54 in overtime to Grand Haven on Saturday at the Breslin Center in East Lansing, according to MLive.com. This marked the second straight year Grosse Pointe South lost in the state title game to Grand Haven. The Blue Devils lost last year's Class A state championship game by a score of 54-53. Cierra Rice scored 24 points for Grosse Pointe South, which rallied late this year to force overtime. But the Blue Devils could not stop Grand Haven's Abby Cole in the extra period, and they ended up as runners-up again. Grosse Pointe South Girls Hoops Gains State Finals Rematch Vs. Grand Haven

Blue Devils defeat Dexter 48-29 in Class A state semifinal.

The rematch is on for the Grosse Pointe South girls basketball team. The Blue Devils will face Grand Haven again in the state title game after Grosse Pointe South defeated Dexter 48-29 on Friday afternoon at the Breslin Center in East Lansing. Cierra Rice scored 21 points to lead the Blue Devils in the Class A state semifinal matchup against Dexter. With the victory, Grosse Pointe South improved its record to 25-1 overall and advanced to Saturday’s state championship game at the Breslin Center. There the Blue Devils will meet undefeated Grand Haven, which upended Grosse Pointe South in last year’s final. Tipoff is at noon. Tickets are $10. Emma Kill had 12 points for Dexter. Grosse Pointe South Girls Basketball Heads Back to Breslin

Blue Devils return to state semifinals after defeating Marian 63-58 on Tuesday.

The girls basketball team from Grosse Pointe South is headed back to the Breslin Center. The Blue Devils defeated Bloomfield Hills Marian 63-58 in a Class A quarterfinal Tuesday at Lake Shore High School to advance to the state semifinals for the second straight year, according to the MHSAA. Grosse Pointe South will take on Dexter on Friday at 2:50 p.m. at the Breslin Center in East Lansing. The game will be broadcast live online on mhsaa.tv. Tickets are $8 and can be purchased online at breslincenter.com. Grosse Pointe South has a record of 24-1 overall. Dexter, which defeated Saginaw Heritage 34-33, has a 23-3 overall record.
