Grosse Pointe Shores hosts "Boo Fest" TONIGHT at Shores' Park.
Community Halloween events abound in the Pointes starting this week. Boo Fest The Village of Grosse Pointe Shores will host "Boo Fest" for Shores residents and their guests. Activities include a hayride through the park, bouce house, haunted house, pumpkin patch, treats and a bonfire. The spooky event starts at 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Shores' Municipal Park and is for costumed children 12 and under (2 and under are free). Tickets are $6 and are available at the Shores Municipal offices. Halloween in the Park Grosse Pointe Park will host "Halloween in the Park" on Saturday, Oct. 27 starting at 4:30 p.m. This exciting costumed event is for young children and elementary school students. Local Republicans have established a volunteer campaign center on 9 Mile, near Jefferson, in St. Clair Shores. The center has information about local, state and national candidates running to represent St. Clair Shores and the Grosse Pointes.
Republican volunteers have established a campaign center on 9 Mile, just west of Jefferson, in St. Clair Shores. The center is a meeting place for candidates, volunteers and those interested in receiving additional information about candidates and pick up lawn signs, according to local Republicans. "We wanted to have something local for all the different candidates in St. Clair Shores, Grosse Pointes and surrounding areas in Macomb and Wayne counties," said volunteer Eric Goosen. The center has seen increased activity since Wednesday's presidential debate. Volunteers said they had received over 100 requests for Romney signs by mid-day Thursday. GROSSE POINT – A new trio of programs presented by the Detroit Institute of Arts Speakers Bureau serves to enrich the appreciation of fine art and the amazing people who make art possible. The series is most appropriate as the War Memorial served as a branch of the Detroit Institute of Arts in 1949. The Art Appreciation Series begins Oct. 11 at the Grosse Pointe War Memorial with “Faberge, Designing Luxury.” Future programs include “Seeing Red, The Use of Color” on Wednesday, Nov. 14; and “Women and Art, Female Trailblazers” on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013. If you bicycle, the fall season – and early winter – do not have to hinder your routine, according to Jeremy Barker of American Cycle and Fitness in Grosse Pointe Woods. But because of the cooler and sometimes wetter weather, you should take some precautions, he said. “Make sure your tire pressure is correct,” Barker said. “Check the air pressure before every ride. The movie, "Despicable Me," is free to residents of the Grosse Pointes and will be shown on the Grosse Pointe South football field. It is the second community-wide event coordinated by all of the Parks and Recreation directors.
Grosse Pointe South's football field will be temporarily transformed into a movie theater Saturday for a community-wide, free viewing of Despicable Me. The gates will open at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20. Residents are required to bring their park passes. One nonresident guest will be allowed per park pass and attendees are encouraged to bring blankets, chairs, food and drinks. Alcohol and tobacco products are not permitted on school grounds. It is the second community-wide event coordinated and organized by the directors of the Parks and Recreation departments from each of the Grosse Pointes. The new maps divide the current district representing the five Grosse Pointes and Harper Woods into two districts, each gaining larger portions of Detroit.
Gov. Rick Snyder signed redrawn district maps for both the state House of Representative and Senate into law this morning—the last day for him to do so. The new maps divide the Grosse Pointes and Harper Woods—six communities historically represented by one house district—into two districts adding sections of Detroit to each. Rep. Tim Bledsoe (D-Grosse Pointe) currently represents the district and voted against the new maps. He also sent a letter signed by himself and local political leaders to Snyder asking for the bill to vetoed. Additionally, he forwarded on letters from residents opposing the split. According to the Michigan Legislature website, Snyder signed the maps into law at 11:06 a.m. and notification has since been filed with …
