Grosse Pointe, Harper Woods Police Quell Courtroom Outburst

Five people were arrested Wednesday in Harper Woods District Court following an outburst in the middle of a preliminary exam hearing before Judge Roger A. LaRose among the people in the courtroom gallery.

Officers from the Grosse Pointes assisted Harper Woods police and court staff Wednesday in quelling an outburst that evolved into an altercation in Harper Woods District Court during a preliminary exam in a homicide case. Harper Woods Police Chief Jim Burke announced the arrests in a community alert Wednesday, explaining the problem arose among those in the gallery. What began as a verbal dispute between the large group of supporters for the victim of the homicide  and the large group of supporters of the accused shooter evolved into a physical altercation that spilled out of the courtroom and into lobby of the police department, according to the alert. Gunman from Harper Woods Shooting Incident Nets 27 Felony Charges

Harper Woods resident Lester Chambers has been arraigned on charges stemming from last Friday's shooting incident between Chambers and police at a home on Lancaster.

  Harper Woods Police Chief Jim Burke released a Nixle report on Nov. 19 at 3:46 p.m. about the Nov. 16 shooting incident that put several Grosse Pointe Schools on lockdown just as they were about to end the school day. Police responded to a residence on Lancaster after receiving reports of gun shots from the home.  Chambers fired a shotgun at police from inside his residence, police said. According to the Nixle report, Harper Woods District Judge Roger J. LaRose arraigned Lester Chambers of Harper Woods on Nov. 19 in District Court 32A. Chambers has been remanded to the Wayne County Jail without bond and is facing 27 felony charges issued by the Wayne County Prosecutor.  Chambers has been charged as follows:  (8) counts of Assault with …

Public Safety Members Honored at 'Blue Mass'

Public safety personnel from the Grosse Pointes, Harper Woods and St. Clair Shores are honored at a special service that also remembers the fallen emergency personnel from 9/11.

Members of law enforcement, firefighters, EMS technicians and other civic personnel from the Grosse Pointes, Harper Woods and St. Clair Shores  gathered Sunday, Sept. 9, at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church for a “Blue Mass” honoring their service.  The “Blue Mass” took on special meaning as the community and nation prepared to mark the 11th anniversary of September 11 and the sacrifice of so many police, firefighters and emergency personnel on that tragic day. Carjackers Arraigned on 5 Felonies Each

The two men arrested earlier this week by police in Harper Woods and the Grosse Pointes will be arraigned this afternoon in 36th District Court on multiple felonies stemming from the attempted carjacking and shooting.

The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office announced formal charges Thursday against the two men arrested earlier this week by police in Harper Woods and the Grosse Pointes following an attempted carjacking and shooting at 8 Mile and Gratiot Avenue. The men, Ricardo Sanders, 25, and Steven Powell, 30, were arraigned in 36th District Court in downtown Detroit about 1 p.m. today. The men are each being charged with the following crimes: The men are accused of attempting to steal a car from a man and a woman who were traveling on Gratiot Avenue about 1:30 a.m. Monday. One of the men approached their car while they were at a stop light brandishing a gun and demanding their car. They refused and the man shot both of them. They called 911 from their …

Officers Participate in Joint Training

Public Safety Officers from the City of Grosse Pointe, Grosse Pointe Shores and cross-trained police officers from Harper Woods participated in group training Tuesday on St. Clair Street near the Elworthy baseball field.

Seven officers from three area policing agencies participated in pump operations of a fire truck training Tuesday in the City of Grosse Pointe as part of the newest efforts to streamline fire operations in the Grosse Pointes. Tuesday's training, led by Fire Service Instructor and Fire Technology Coordinator John Smilnak of Schoolcraft College, is the second shared training session among the Pointes and Harper Woods. The efforts are the result of an agreement approved by the five Grosse Pointe city councils as recommended by the Grosse Pointe Public Safety Ad Hoc Committee. Harper Woods, Pointes Police Catch Carjackers

Officers from Harper Woods, Grosse Pointe Woods, Shores and Farms worked together to catch carjackers that chased a couple to the Harper Woods Police Department.

Officers from four local police departments worked together early Monday to arrest two men for attempted carjacking after Harper Woods police received a 911 call from the victims who were shot near 8 Mile and Gratiot roads after refusing to give up their car. They had been driving on Gratiot Avenue near 8 Mile about 1:30 a.m. when they were approached by a man armed with an assault type weapon demanding their car, Harper Woods Police Chief Jim Burke said. They were stopped at a red light. When they refused to give it to him, he shot both of them, he said.   They called 911 from a cell phone, which picked up the nearest tour and routed their emergency call to Harper Woods Police. Mark: Well said. Bashing Grosse Pointers as elitists is one of the only politically correct things people can do, so why not? UPDATE: 1 Dead, 1 Injured After Semi Truck Hits Kroger at Harper, 8 Mile

A tractor-trailer truck went up the embankment off I-94 and hit the Kroger at Harper and 8 Mile shortly after 6 a.m. Saturday, killing one person and injuring another.

The driver of a semitruck died and at least one person was injured after a tractor-trailer rig was struck by another vehicle, lost control and drove into the Kroger at Harper Avenue and 8 Mile Road shortly before 6:30 p.m. Saturday. The truck crashed through the back wall of the recently remodeled store into what appeared to be a dock loading/storage area.  The truck went up the embankment on eastbound I-94 and crashed into the store. At least two other sedans parked in lanes on I-94 East were also damaged. Harper Woods Police and fire officials confirmed Saturday night that the driver died and another person was injured in the accident.
