America celebrates its 236th birthday this July 4 and with the help of the U.S. Census, we have a few fun facts to help mark the day.
Happy 236th America! You're looking pretty good for having more than two centuries under your belt. The U.S. Census has been keeping track of your progress since the beginning and on this Fourth of July, we have some of those numbers to put this milestone in perspective. 2.5 million – The estimated number of people living in the newly independent nation in July 1776. 313.9 million – The nation's estimated population on this July 4. $223.6 million – The value of fireworks imported from China in 2011, representing the bulk of all U.S. fireworks imported ($232.5 million). Among the many events scheduled in the Grosse Pointes this week, here are some of the highlights: 1. Trash collection will be delayed by one day in most of the Grosse Pointes beginning Wednesday July 4, which is Independence Day. City offices in all five of the Grosse Pointes are closed that day and the Woods offices will remain closed Thursday, July 5 as an unpaid furlough day for employees. For those with garbage collection on Friday, it'll happen Saturday. 2. The city of Grosse Pointe Farms is planning an all-day celebration of the nation's independence for its residents.
Grosse Pointe Farms will be hosting its Annual Regatta and Fireworks show on Saturday at Pier Park in celebration of Independence Day. According to the Grosse Pointe Farms Department of Parks and Recreation, the all-day, no-cost event is open only to Grosse Pointe Farms residents, but non-residents can trek to Lakeshore Drive to park and catch a glimpse of the show that night. Starting at 10:30 a.m. with a bicycle parade, the event will continue on throughout the day with a pie-eating contest, an inflatable boat race, face-painting, a yellow rubber duck race—one duck for $3 and two for $5—a sandcastle contest, a pie-baking contest and a magician before finally reaching the fireworks display. You're right its not the birthday but is so widely thought to be that 4july1776 is just accepted as the birthday of the usa. Not a big deal in my opinion when you figure we have plenty of pointless holidays as it is.   more ›
