Fifth grade teacher Pat Brown finished his half-marathon Saturday in less than two hours wearing the student-voted hula girl costume. Kerby Elementary School students organized a fundraiser this month to benefit the family of a former Parcells Middle School teacher, Brian Aulph, who died unexpectedly in Feburary due to complications following heart surgery. The students at Kerby paid at least $1 to vote for the costume Brown would wear during his half-marathon. There were five possibilities and hula girl came in first place with $632. Overall the students raised more than $1,000. Brown completed the half-marathon Saturday in Mt. Clemens with a time of 1:54:46. A fifth grade Kerby Elementary School teacher will run a half-marathon Saturday dressed as a hula girl. He will also wear a sign announcing that Kerby students helped raise more than $1,000.
Pat Brown made his first appearance before the Kerby Elementary student body Friday sporting a hula girl outfit complete with a coconut bikini top, a grass skirt and many brightly colored flowers. Beneath the hula girl costume, Brown wore running gear--a tech shirt, running shorts and running shoes. Brown is running a half-marathon early Saturday in Mt. Clemens as part of a schoolwide fundraiser that will benefit the family of late Parcells Middle School teacher Brian Aulph. Dozens of teachers in the Grosse Pointe Public School System participated in a peaceful protest of sorts of Gov. Rick Snyder's school budget plan Tuesday.
Teachers at many of the Grosse Pointe Public Schools handed out fliers to parents Tuesday—some before and some after the school day—providing information about Gov. Rick Snyder's budget plans and what those mean for Grosse Pointe students. The peaceful protest of sorts is part of a larger plan by the Michigan Education Association, which organized the MEA Day of Action for Tuesday. Teachers across the state were encouraged to wear red in support of education. Events by local education associations were planned through the state according to the MEA website and locally, the Grosse Pointe Education Association members were encouraged to participate, President Ranae Beyerlein said. Some of the Grosse Pointe schools chose not to participate …
