A new league serving boys ages 13 and older is accepting registration now throughout the five Grosse Pointes, which will serve as a transition between Little League and the junior/senior league.
In an effort to keep more Grosse Pointe boys playing baseball, officials from the Grosse Pointe Farms-City Little League have begun a new transition league for players 13 years old and older. The 50/70 Intermediate League allows the players to use a field that is slightly bigger than what is used for little league but slightly smaller than the junior/senior league, said Will Lianos and Geoff Vernon, two of the dads who helped establish the new league. It will serve players from all five Grosse Pointes and possibly Harper Woods, if they agree to be a part of the league, Lianos said. National organization rules the Grosse Pointe Woods-Shores Little League must re-assign players to teams in its premier, competitive division. An informational meeting has been called for Thursday night.
With opening day less than three weeks away, the Grosse Pointe Woods-Shores Little League has had to shake up its teams. The Little League’s national organization ruled that the Woods-Shores did not use an equitable system to select players for the teams in the major league—the premier, competitive division for children ages 9-12—according to an email from Nina Johnson, the Central Region Director of Little League Baseball and Softball. “My office had received some correspondence that had indicated that Grosse Pointe Wood Shores LL may have used a player selection system that was not in accordance with one of the approved methods,” Johnson wrote in an email to Patch. “Upon contacting the league president, it was confirmed that the league …

While the Park program accomplished similar success in 2008, it's rare that three teams from the same program take the district title and advance into state competition, parents and league officials say.
Two teams from Grosse Pointe Park's Little League program have earned the district title after playing several area teams and have advanced to the next level. Another of the program's teams have earned the state title and will advance to the Great Lakes Regional competition. The 10U and 11U teams are competing at the state level this weekend, with the 10U playing at Johnston Park in Harper Woods. The 11U team is in Midland. Both teams have games Sunday July 31. Meanwhile, the 12U team earned the district and state title. They played in Commerce Township against Birmingham, Rogers City, Midland and Norway-winning all games--to win the state championship, parent Amy Graham said.
