Fun for All at Mason Fall Festival

Rain could not slow down the good times at the Mason Elementary Fall Festival in Grosse Pointe Woods.

Overcast skies and rainy weather, the fun kept on going at the Mason Elementary Fall Festival on Saturday. There was a chili cookoff, a candy hunt and plenty of games. Bounce houses were moved to the gym because of the weather in Grosse Pointe, but parents still stood outside to sell pumpkins for the PTO. Did you go to the festival? Then upload a photo by clicking on the green "Upload Photos and Videos" icon. Does your school have a fundraiser, concert or other fun activity coming up? Then add it as an Event to Grosse Pointe Patch.

Grosse Pointe Public School officials intended to observe the first day of classes at Mason and Poupard elementaries closely after experiencing a rapid rise in enrollment late last week specificlly for kindergarten. Late Tuesday, two job openings for all-day kindergarten were posted on the district's website--one each for Mason and Poupard. Mason Cafeteria Worker Dies in Car Wreck

The Grosse Pointe elementary school will collect donations for family this week.

Tina Thornton, who worked in the lunchroom at Mason Elementary School, and her husband Cedric died in a car accident on Jan. 1, according to a letter from school officials sent home with students on Wednesday. Thornton, a Harper Woods resident, had worked at Mason since 2009. “Tina had been battling cancer for the last two years but always reported to work regardless of how she was feeling,” according to the letter from Dr. Elaine Middlekauff, the principal at Mason, and Michelle Knotts, the general manager of Sodexo Food Services for Grosse Pointe Public Schools. “She always told us the children made her feel better,” Middlekauff and Knotts said in the letter. “Tina and Cedric Thornton had been actively involved with the PLP program, in …

Car Turning onto Vernier Causes Accident

An adult and child were hospitalized for observation following an accident Wednesday morning on Vernier, east of Mack.

Grosse Pointe Woods police are investigating an accident Wednesday morning on Vernier, at Sunningdale Park. Police Det. Sgt. Ray Yonkowski said a driver was turning west on Vernier off Sunningdale Park about 8 a.m. and struck an eastbound vehicle. The driver claimed "she didn't see" the other car, according to Yonkowski. The collision caused the air bags to deploy, striking the driver in her face. The woman and her son were transported to St. John Hospital for "precautionary measures," he said. The driver in the second vehicle was not injured. A third vehicle involved had minor scruff marks, Yonkowski said. Ages of those involved were not available as police continue their investigation. The accident was a topic of concern for those who …

I've always thought that is a dangerous turn. Hard to see west bound traffic because of the golf course foliage. I hope everyone will be ok.   more ›

Elementary Running Club Holds First Meet

More than 50 elementary-aged children participated in the Grosse Pointe Fishflies Running Club's first meet at Lake Front Park.

Students from Mason, Ferry and Poupard elementary schools ran in the Grosse Pointe Fishflies first meet that included a 1.25 mile distance race, a 40-yard dash and 0.25-mile relay event. Parent and one of the organization's founders, Stephanie Stallings, said the meet began Friday in Lake Front Park with a talk from Paul Hefferon of Hansons Running Shop about the four F's: feet, fuel, fluids and fun.  The children ran the distance race first and everyone finished in less than 17 minutes, according to a press release from Stallings. During the 40-yard dash, the children were also able to complete an obstacle course and play octopus tag before completing the final event.  Following the running challenges, the children participated in an …

The track meet was an outstanding event, and we think the running clubs are too. Hats off to Mason, Ferry & Poupard (and the parents that make it happen.) I hope more schools come on board in the Fall. Go Fishflies! (p.s. My 4th grader LOVES running club and is enjoying the summer session. Thanks!)   more ›
