Local, State Politicians Push Tourism, End of Dumping in Lake St. Clair

State Rep. Anthony Forlini, R-Harrison Township, showed off Lake St. Clair Thursday afternoon to key members of the Michigan House of Representatives, as well as water and tourism groups, during an hour-long boat tour.

Impressed by stretches of inviting aqua waters, businesses and houses along the shore and scores of boats sailing the lake, state representatives are eager to push Lake St. Clair as a Pure Michigan attraction. At the invitation of State Rep. Anthony Forlini, R-Harrison Township, House Majority Floor Leader Jim Stamas of Midland took an hour-long boat tour Thursday afternoon of the lake, heading into the mouth of the Clinton River. Stamas and Forlini also were joined by representatives from the popular Belle Maer Harbor marina, Lake St. Clair Tourism Initiative, Clinton-River Watershed and Patch. House Speaker Pro Tem John Walsh of Livonia and Harrison Township Supervisor Kenneth Verkest also were on hand following the tour. Promoting the …

I've see lake bottom condition using self-contained underwater breating appratus. It is usually layered with watershed silt. Bottom artifacts are often all but buried by drains. You need to know depth and extent of pollution. It won't all wash away. You might not see a ring in your basin. Where is nearest landfill assuming grossepointe had pockets deep enough to dredge lake dumps? Not dredging …   more ›

Good Morning Grosse Pointe: July 22

A few quick bits of information to get your day started in Grosse Pointe.

Five things to get your day started in Grosse Pointe.  1. It might feel cooler today, just a teeny tiny bit. Temperatures are to reach 89 with a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms and rainshowers, according to National Weather Service. Gusty winds could reach up to 18 miles per hour and the nighttime will be most cloudy.  2. Bike paths for the Grosse Pointes are being reviewed by an engineer inching forward a project that began about two years ago as an idea. The proposed routes have been established by officials from all five of the Grosse Pointes and will still have to ultimately be approved by all of the city councils. 3. Officials continue to oppose redrawn district maps calling for the current state House district representing the …

Grosse Pointe Shores to Send Letter of Opposition to Governor

The council unanimously approved a proposal to send a letter opposing the redrawn district maps calling for the division of the Grosse Pointes and Harper Woods for state House representation.

In hopes of influencing Gov. Rick Snyder before he signs redrawn maps into law, Grosse Pointe Shores is sending a letter opposing the new districts proposed for the Grosse Pointes and Harper Woods.  The redrawn maps—as passed by both the state Senate and House—call for the current district representing the Grosse Pointes and Harper Woods to be divided into two districts. Each new district would include more of Detroit.  Having two districts for the Grosse Pointes and Harper Woods is of concern to many political leaders, including current House Rep. Tim Bledsoe, who voted against the redrawn maps.  Bledsoe said the concern is that the Pointes may essentially lose representation under the proposed districts—meaning the Pointes and Harper …

House Passes New District Map That Divides Grosse Pointe

Rep. Tim Bledsoe believes the divide would be disastrous to the Grosse Pointes and Harper Woods.

The Michigan House of Representatives passed a new district map late Tuesday in a 65-42 vote that calls for the division of the Grosse Pointes from one district into two.  The re-drawing of the district map is something legislators do every 10 years to maintain equal representation by elected officials and generally follows trends of the U.S. Census, which is what determines the population for any particular area.  Under the new districts, Grosse Pointe Woods, Grosse Pointe Shores and Harper Woods will be combined with a significant portion of Detroit from Warren Avenue and east of Gratiot. That area would be the new District 1.  Meanwhile, Grosse Pointe Farms, the City of Grosse Pointe and Grosse Pointe Park will be included with a …
