Organizers are planning to hold the tournament Jan. 25-27 on the canals next to Brownie's on the Lake in St. Clair Shores.
The recent sub-freezing temperatures may have put a chill on many outdoor events, but has organizers of the Nautical Mile Pond Hockey Winter Classic warming up plans for a weekend of games, activities and civic pride in St. Clair Shores. Organizers decided Thursday to move forward with the outdoor hockey tournament after temperatures recently dropped enough to cause the canals next to Brownie's on the Lake to freeze. Additionally, the seven-day forecast includes nighttime temperatures dropping below freezing. "We are a go," said Shawn Nicholson, vice-president of the St. Clair Shores Hockey Association and one of the organizers of the event. "I am a lot more confident now than I was two weeks ago." Organizers of the Nautical Mile Pond Hockey Winter Classic are hoping for a traditional winter this year to allow for a weekend of outdoor hockey games on Lake St. Clair. The inaugural tournament had been planned for this past January, but unseasonably warm temperatures and a lack of ice led to the cancellation of the event. Even though Mother Nature didn't cooperate, there is still a large amount of interest in the event by sponsors, organizers and teams. "All the ground work was set out last year," said Greg Esler, St. Clair Shores Parks and Recreation director. "We are excited about it." Organizers of the inaugural Nautical Mile Pond Hockey Winter Classic announced Thursday the tournament will be rescheduled for the second weekend in February. With temperatures predicted to be around 40 in the coming days and the current lack of ice on the canals next to Brownies on the Lake—where the tournament will be played—the Winter Classic was moved from the weekend of Jan. 20-22 to Feb. 10-12. Gina Rheaume, recreation sports manager for St. Clair Shores Parks and Recreation department, said the 64 teams currently registered will have the option to remain in the tournament or withdraw for a full refund.
