New Juice Bar Celebrates Grand Opening in Grosse Pointe Park

A new business, Jungle Juice Bar, featuring fruit and vegetable smoothies, raw juices and more, celebrated its grand-opening Thursday with a vine-cutting with the Grosse Pointe Chamber of Commerce.

Jungle Juice Bar in Grosse Pointe Park was a longtime in the making. Co-owner Regeania Hunter-Coleman essentially turned a hobby/lifestyle of her own into a business, she said.  For years, she has been juicing her own combinations at home. It began years ago when she discovered she had an allergy to an ingredient in vitamins. She still needed the vitamins but was prevented from consuming vitamin pills as a result. Now years later, Hunter-Coleman along with her niece, Syretta Hunter, own Jungle Juice Bar in Grosse Pointe Park. The pair celebrated their grand-opening Thursday with the Grosse Pointe Chamber of Commerce with a vine-cutting. Jungle Juice Bar offeres a variety of fruit and vegetable smoothies, raw juices, coffee, fruit and …

Restaurant, Women's Boutique Coming to Village

A new French restaurant and a women's boutique retailer will be new additions to the Village in the City of Grosse Pointe.

Several changes are happening in the Village and preparations for two new businesses are underway: a French restaurant and a speciality women's boutique. The restaurant, named Marais, will be located at Kercheval Avenue and St. Clair Street, said property manager James Bellanca Jr., who oversees the management for 18 properties in the Village. Marais will occupy the corner store most recently occupied by the Grosse Pointe Art Center as well as the neighboring space, which was the longtime location of Bellissima Boutique. The combination of the two areas will make the restaurant 6,100-square-feet, Bellanca said. It will be a high-end restaurant with white table linens, Bellanca said. Well known chef David Gilbert is behind the restaurant. …

Luxe Bar and Grille to Fill Former Lucy's in Grosse Pointe Farms

The former Lucy's space on the Hill is currently under renovation for a new restaurant, Luxe Bar and Grille.

A new restaurant will be opening on the Hill this spring named Luxe Bar and Grille. Construction is on-going in the former Lucy's restaurant at 115 Kercheval Ave. Lucy's closed last summer permanently. A sign initially told passersby of a plumbing problem that needed to be fixed but the restaurant had been in default on financial obligations. The new restaurant is currently underway, Grosse Pointe Farms Director of Public Service Terry Brennan said. The opening will likely be in late spring, he said, citing the pace of construction. The restaurant is one of many new businesses to make the Hill its home in the last several months. Capricious, a high-end shoe and accessory store, opened in November next to the League Shop; Beaumont Grosse …

Lucy's was a classic because a lack of options. When the original owners opened it, they had the concept dialed-in. As soon as they sold it, it started a slow downward slide.   more ›

New Home Store, F & H, Opens on the Hill

A new home store in Grosse Pointe Farms opened Saturday offering items ranging in price point from $8 to $25,000. The building, which formerly housed Bambu, was gutted and remodeled for F & H For the Home.

Nina Tocco says her new store, F & H For the Home, has something for everyone. The new business at 75 Kercheval on the Hill offers a variety of design options for homes from floor to ceiling and everything in the middle. The new business opened Saturday. Tocco, 29, grew up in Grosse Pointe Park. She went to school in Chicago for fine art with heavy emphasis in fine arts and fashion design. She had been living in Palm Beach before she moved back, where she worked for the Ritz Carlton as a merchandiser and purchaser. After moving back to the Pointes, Tocco "fell in love with interiors," she said, explaining it had been an interest of her mother's for years. Meanwhile, the storefront at 75 Kercheval opened up when Bambu closed, spurring her …

Business Buzz: Great Clips in the Village

A sign in the window of a long-empty storefront of Kercheval Place announces Great Clips as a new business that is "coming soon."

Great Clips will be opening a location in the Village, according to a sign in the window of the Kercheval Place storefront that has remained vacant since the building was re-purposed from the vacant Jacobon's. The sign simply says "Great Clips Coming Soon." It is a unique business to the Pointes as there are a variety of hair salons and barber shops throughout the community but none that are corporate stores as Great Clips. There is also a restaurant that is slated to move in to the former Hickey's Walton Pierce building. Patch readers reacted to the picture Saturday after it was posted to Facebook. Some say they are happy to see a business fill the storefront while others were less enthusiastic about it. It is among several changes …

Stefanie, I think you must mean a "certain type of people", which is the problem we have in the Village and all the Pointes. People who think they are too good or have their noses in the air. Get real. Not everyone can afford those two salons and isn't it more convenient to take your kid to a Great Clips in the Village than to have to trudge all the way out someone else? Residents of the Pointes …   more ›

Goldfish Swim School Considers Location in Grosse Pointe, St. Clair Shores

A franchise specializing in year-round swim lessons for children is asking for input from families in the Grosse Pointes and St. Clair Shores to determine whether such a business in the area would be beneficial.

A year-round swim school located in five other Michigan cities is asking for input from parents in the Grosse Pointes and St. Clair Shores about whether having a franchise in the area would be beneficial. Goldfish Swim School is trying to gain as much feedback as possible while researching whether to open a location in the Grosse Pointe-St. Clair Shores area, according to a letter recently given to parents at Assumption Nursery School. Parents are asked in the letter to complete a short survey online, which is estimated to take about two minutes. Along with the survey, parents are asked to express how they would feel about having a Goldfish location in the area. Opening a location nearby would be an estimated investment of about $1 million…

Neighborhood Club also has a curriculum and it is year round and has warm water and makes swimming fun. Sounds a little familiar. The Neighborhood Club just opened in the Village of Grosse Pointe and they offer the same exact services, but for a better price and have the same certifications as Goldfish. Seems like it may be a waste of a million dollars to provide the same exact service.   more ›

Three Restaurants Planned for Grosse Pointe Park

Birmingham restaurateur Mindy Lopus will be opening not one, but three new eateries in Grosse Pointe Park this winter and spring —starting with Red Crown in the old Standard Oil Station on Kercheval.

It’s raining outside, but that doesn’t dampen Mindy Lopus’ mood or smile as she gestures to the former Standard Oil service station at the corner of Kercheval and Beaconsfield in Grosse Pointe Park. “Isn’t it great,” Lopus grins watching workmen bang away as they transform the former garage into her vision for Red Crown, an American comfort food destination that will embrace the same farm to table philosophy of Lopus’ Birmingham restaurants, Tallulah’s Wine Bar and Bistro and Bellapiatti. Lopus’ latest venture, Red Crown, is a departure from the French bistro flair of Tallulah’s and the rustic Italian fare of Bellapiatti--which opened last year and made the Detroit Free Press 2011 list of Metro Detroit's 10 Best New Restaurants. The new…

Get in Your Last Licks As Wally's Prepares for Move to St. Clair Shores

The owners of Wally's Frozen Custard, the iconic, east side frozen custard shop, will close Sunday in preparation to move their business to St. Clair Shores. The estimated opening date for the new location is Oct. 6.

The owners of Wally's Frozen Custard will soon be closing the iconic, yellow building in Harper Woods in preparation to move the business to St. Clair Shores. For more than 60 years, generations of families in St. Clair Shores and the Grosse Pointes have visited the shop for frozen treats. But come Sunday, it will be the final day to get a twist or Boston cooler at the current location. After the final cone is served, owners Matt and Eliza Ahearn will begin to move their frozen custard machines and other equipment north on Harper to their new location in St. Clair Shores. "I have been going there since I was a kid," said a sentimental Matt Ahearn, who is looking forward to the new location. "We will have more space to serve everybody." The…

New Pastry, Crepe Cafe to Open in Village

Sweet Little Sheila's Pastry & Crepe Cafe will open in the former Burger Pointe in early September. The owners are putting together the finishing touches to the building and will celebrate their grand-opening Sept. 5.

Owners of Side Street Diner, Megan Spicer and Sheila Taylor, are branching out by opening a second business specializing in pastries, other sweet treats and crepes. The new business, Sweet Little Sheila's Pastry and Crepe Cafe, is a continuation of a cake making business Taylor operated out of her home for years, they said. Among other things, Side Street Diner is known for the large cakes that dot the countertop tempting those eating lunch and dinner. Simply put the cake business was operating out of Side Street but they ran out of room to allow it to expand, they said Monday after gaining approval from the City of Grosse Pointe council for a new sign. The opportunity sort of presented itself to Spicer and Taylor, they said, explaining …

Ribbon-Cutting: McDonald's at Mack & Canyon

McDonald's opened it's doors for business at midnight Friday, offering prizes to the first 300 customers, which followed a ribbon-cutting ceremony late Thursday and a VIP party.

The owners of the new McDonald's on Mack Avenue at Canyon/Moran roads celebrated the grand-opening late Thursday with a large gathering at the first "green" location of the fast-food chain restaurant in Detroit. The restaurant borders Grosse Pointe Farms and will be open 24 hours a day, offering drive-through service only at night. The night began with a ribbon-cutting ceremony with the Grosse Pointe Chamber of Commerce and several Grosse Pointe and Detroit city officials in addition to two state representatives, Tim Bledsoe and Alberta Tinsley-Talabi. Outside, the restaurant offers a large dining patio. Inside, the restuarant offers a variety of booth and bar seating tables that are not the traditional hard-molded plastic in most McDonald…
