Pope Names Grosse Pointe Woods Priest 'Monsignor'

Grosse Pointe Woods' Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church's Pastor Gary Smetanka is named 'Monsignor' by Pope Benedict XVI.

  GROSSE POINTE WOODS – Detroit Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron has announced that Pope Benedict XVI has conferred the title of “Monsignor” upon eight Detroit-area priests, including Gary Smetanka, pastor of Our Lady Star of the Sea in Grosse Pointe Woods. A prayer service to commemorating this honor for all the new monsignors will be held at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, January 23, with a reception following. The honorary title of “monsignor” is given to Roman Catholic priests as a sign of appreciation and recognition of the service they have rendered, both locally and in the world. Fairy Tale Fundraiser to Help Star of the Sea School

In a last-minute venue change, Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic School will host the Enchanted Princess Ball and bring dozens of fairy tale characters to life for Grosse Pointe kids. The event is a fundraiser to help the school purchase technology.

The fairy tale fantasies of hundreds of Grosse Pointe boys and girls will come to life this month at the Enchanted Princess Ball, a fundraiser that will bring dozens of princes, princesses and even villains to Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic School in the Woods. The touring theatrical presentation is being hired by the school for three two-hour shows on Oct. 15 and 16, marking the first time the Port Huron-based company has performed in Grosse Pointe. Tickets are $17 and can be purchased at the school office or online for an additional service fee at the show's Web site.
