The 37th annual Grosse Pointe Santa Claus Parade is the biggest event of the year in the Grosse Pointe area, and the 2012 edition will showcase nearly 100 parade units and community groups! The parade takes place on Friday, November 23 at 10:00 a.m. Featured attractions this year include the Ecorse Community , Grosse Pointe North, De La Salle, Harper Woods and Grosse Pointe South High School marching bands; strolling Christmas Carolers; the Shen Yun Christmas Float; the Redford Unicycle Club; The Detroit Fire Department Clowns and dozens of marching units from area organizations. The parade will begin at 5:30 p.m. from Monteith Elementary School, travel along Morningside Drive to North High School. The football game begins at 7 p.m. against L'Anse Cruese North High School.
Grosse Pointe North High School is celebrating homecoming this week and a parade will kick off the weekend festivities beginning at 5:30 p.m. The parade floats and participants will line up in the parking lot of Monteith Elementary School and then travel down Morningside Drive to North High School. The football game is tonight, Friday, Oct. 7 and the dance begins at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8. President Obama will be at the Detroit Labor Day parade downtown on Monday. The Michigan Democratic Party will give away tickets to the event Saturday.
President Obama will speak to thousands of people in Detroit on Labor Day. The Michigan Democratic Party will give out hundreds of tickets on Saturday to Monday's event. The annual Detroit Labor Day parade starts 9 a.m. Monday at the Building Trades at Michigan and Trumbull or the AFL-CIO at 9:30 at Mack and Woodward. The president will speak at 1 p.m. just east of the Renaissance Center downtown. Aretha Franklin will sing before his speech. The event is free and open to the public. Gates open at 10 am and the event is general admission. Tickets will be handed out from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, or until tickets run out, at the Oakland County Democratic Party 91 N. Dozens of residents gathered along Lake Shore Road in Grosse Pointe Shores Sunday afternoon for the parade that kicked off the official 100th birthday party for the city.
Celebrations continued Sunday by Grosse Pointe Shores residents and officials during the official birthday party at Osius Park. The day began with a parade along Lake Shore Road from the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House to the park. In addition to live music from a bagpiper band and the South Lake High School Marching Band, the parade includes many local celebrities, such as the National Coney Island chef and Big Boy. Several elected officials including Grosse Pointe Shores councilmen Ted Kedzierski, Dan Schulte, Brian Geraghty, David Galbenski, State Representative Tim Bledsoe and U.S. Representative Hansen Clarke were in the parade. A plethora of events are scheduled throughout the weekend to honor and celebrate the city's 100 years of existence. Here is a schedule of the events.
The Grosse Pointe Shores Centennial celebrations begin tonight with a private reception at the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House where the Detroit Symphony Orchestra will play during a fireworks display. A cocktail reception begins at 6:30 p.m. The event is sold out.
