Grosse Pointe Theatre presents Big River, Opens Jan. 20

A rousing musical tale of Huckleberry Finn and friends on the mighty Mississippi with a cast and crew from far reaches of Metro Detroit.

  Grosse Pointe Theatre announces the third play in its 65th Anniversary Season, the rousing musical, Big River, which opens on Sunday, Jan. 20. In this rousing musical, taken from Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the audience is swept down the mighty Mississippi with the irrepressible Huck Finn, who helps his friend Jim, a slave, escape to freedom at the mouth of the Ohio River. Their adventures along the way are hilarious, suspenseful and heart-warming, bringing to life favorite characters from the novel: the Widow Douglas and her stern sister, Miss Watson; the uproarious King and Duke (who may or may not be as harmless as they seem); Huck's partner in crime, Tom Sawyer, and their rowdy gang of pals; Huck's drunken father, …

Eight Grosse Pointe Children in Michigan Opera 'Winter Fantasy'

Michigan Opera Children's Chorus 'Winter Fantasy' performs Sunday, Dec. 9 at 2 p.m.

  DETROIT - The Michigan Opera Theatre Children’s Chorus presents its sixth-annual holiday concert and fundraiser on the main stage of the Detroit Opera House on Sunday, Dec. 9 at 2 p.m. The choir is a must-see performance for children who love music, and the perfect opportunity for the whole family to enjoy a cultural experience at one of Detroit’s historical gems while supporting the appreciation of the arts in a new generation. Grosse Pointe South Presents 'Pops & Pastries'

Annual Fall Concert and fundraising event, Friday, Nov. 30 at 7 p.m.

Grosse Pointe South Band & Orchestra presents its annual Fall concert and fundraising event, Pops & Pastries, Friday, November 30 at 7 p.m.  Please join us at the Main Gymnasium to welcome Christopher Takis in his inaugural concert as Director of Bands at South High School, with unlimited pastries, a tin-can auction and 50-50 raffle.  This year's theme, "A Salute to Disney," was chosen in conjunction with the music department's Spring trip to Disney Land, California. Grosse Pointe South, University Liggett Teachers Receive Honors

Two teachers—one from from Grosse Pointe South and one from University Liggett—recently received honors for their work in the classroom and beyond.

Grosse Pointe South American History and Economics teacher Bruce Pelto has been named the 2012 Michigan Outstanding Teacher of American History by the Michigan Society of Daughters of the American Revolution. Pelto competed for the award at a regional level and then was selected to be advanced to the state level. After winning at the state level, he will also be considered at the national level within the organization. The Grosse Pointe Public School Board recognized Pelto for his award during their last board meeting. He has been teaching with Grosse Pointe Public Schools for the last 11 years but has been an educator for much longer.
