State Reps. From Macomb Get Educated on Early Childhood Resources

Several Macomb County State Representatives recently met with Great Start Macomb to learn more about the countless resources available for the 50,000 children under the age of 5 living in Macomb County.

The problem: one in four children under the age of five are living in poverty in Macomb County, there are 57 main languages spoken at homes in the county and more than 50 percent of children not attending a preschool program before entering kindergarten. The solution: Great Start of Macomb, which is part of statewide initiative that supports families and children 0-5 so they can start school ready to learn and succeed. Great Start, which is primarily funded by the state and a number or Michigan-based foundations, was created in 2004 to restructure the state’s investment in children. The Macomb Chapter opened in 2008 and connects parents with local organizations such as the Health Department, faith-based communities, the Macomb Literacy …

Yet, children can experience daily stress in school as they work to comprehend new concepts and materials on a daily basis. Just imagine how challenging that can be if a child lacks confidence? According to a new study, it is that lack of confidence, generally considered a negative emotion, and the resulting inability to concentrate, that can sometimes compound this stress and prevent a child from realizing that he or she actually does understand the material. The study published in the …

Happy 75th Birthday, Maire!

Alumni, students, staff celebrate the milestone anniversary.

Maire Elementary School students got an unusual history lesson - and a break from the routine - Thursday when the school celebrated its 75th anniversary. An assembly in the school gym marked the occasion and had kids learning about Lewis E. Maire, who was an eye doctor, father of nine and instrumental in the formation of the school district. They also learned that farm animals once visited the school as part of its Maire Fair. The fair is still a community event held every three years (this year's is March 24), but the only animals today are the gold fish won in one of the classroom carnival games. About 15 Maire alumni and 300-plus students turned out to celebrate with a cake, a balloon-bearing, big, stuffed bear--Maire's mascot is the …

It's that time of year when students are likely eager to be out of school for summer. Educators too!  There is much to be done. Final projects, final exams, prom, graduation, field-day and all of the end of the year traditions intending to let students leave on a good note. This is our first year of dealing with this issue. My oldest is in Kindergarten, but my plan is to keep our school routine firmly in place until the last day of school. So far, he hasn't balked a bit. He's playing outside after our homework and dinner are finished, but still in bed by 8 pm as usual. My 4 year old is already finished with preschool for the year.   more ›
