In less than five years, the Grosse Pointe Woods-born restaurant has grown to a chain of four - with more to come.
The space was small, but the plan was not, when John and Elizabeth Bornoty opened The Big Salad in Grosse Pointe Woods in 2008. What the couple envisioned was to market the salad in a new way by making it a meal rather than a beginner or a side dish with a classed-up salad bar chock-full-of-toppings. It would be the the foundation a company that would spread across metro Detroit, Michigan and beyond. Four years later, their little postage stamp store on Mack Avenue, a calming mix of greens and yellows around a smorgasbord of colorful salad toppings has grown to three larger locations. The Village Toy Company is abuzz with little feet and curious faces as children crowd into the popular toy store on Kercheval Avenue in The Village in Grosse Pointe. It's a Friday afternoon in November and yet the holiday hum is already in full swing as children swirl through the store looking at the latest toy offerings for this holiday season and heading to a birthday party in the store's special event suite. Owner Ellen Durand said that, while no one toy is the "Tickle Me Elmo" for 2012, there are several toys that she expects to be popular with kids this year. The Wine Garden is hosting a wine tasting today for the release of Beaujolais Nouveau wine.
Turkey fans may look forward to the fourth Thursday in November for Thanksgiving, but for wine aficionados Nouveau Day is their holiday. The third Thursday in November is the first day consumers can try Beaujolais Nouveau, a wine which is made from the first harvest of grapes from the Beaujolais region of Burgundy, France. The wine only ferments for a few weeks before it is shipped around the world, and into stores in the Grosse Pointes including The Village Wine Shop and Merchant's Fine Wine. To mark the occasion The Wine Garden has planned a special tasting event for 2012 vintage, and other French wines, paired with a freshly cooked turkey. St. Clair Shores-based Viviano Flower Shop opened a fourth location Monday on Mack in Grosse Pointe Woods.
Viviano Flower Shop has expanded into Grosse Pointe Woods with a new location on Mack Avenue. The St. Clair Shores-based florist opened the new location Monday in the former Thai Cafe at at 20087 Mack Ave, and has fulfilled a long-time goal of the family-owned business to move the Grosse Pointes. "We've always wanted to have a store in Grosse Pointe. It is a pretty tight-knit community and loyal to local businesses in the community," said Frank Viviano, whose father founded the business in 1937. "We have a lot of Grosse Pointe customers and hope to expand our customer base." The Grosse Pointe Chamber of Commerce and Grosse Pointe Patch will collect canned food for Gleaners at the Grosse Pointe Chamber of Commerce Community Business Expo on Tuesday at the Grosse Pointe War Memorial.
