Familiar Face to Lead HR for GP Schools

Provided the Grosse Pointe Public School Board approves his hiring tonight, Michael Jon Dean will replace Tom Harwood as the assistant superintendent of human resources.

Grosse Pointe Schools Superintendent Tom Harwood will ask the school board to approve his replacement tonight as assistant superindent of human resources. His selection is one of the fellow superintendent candidates: Michael Jon Dean. Dean is the assistant superintendent for human resources at Birmingham Public Schools. He's been in the position about four years. He was one of the three finalists in Grosse Pointe's search for retired Superintendent C. Suzanne Klein. If the school board approves the monthly human resources report presented by Harwood, who has officially taken the helm of the district but is likely still transitioning since his former position is not yet filled, Dean will begin with the district Feb. 13. Dean's experience …

Suzanne Klein Gets Roasted at Retirement Party

The superintendent of Grosse Pointe Public Schools is calling it quits in December, but she's not getting out without a few laughs at her quirky ways.

Dozens gathered at the Grosse Pointe War Memorial Wednesday to toast and roast Dr. C. Suzanne Klein, the superintendent of Grosse Pointe Public Schools since 1997, who is retiring in December. No topic was off-limits—except maybe Klein’s hair. “I got a threatening phone call on my way over here to not talk about her hair, and three anonymous letters,” joked roaster Chris Fenton, an assistant superintendent whose closing act rocked the ballroom overlooking Lake St. Clair. Klein got her start in Grosse Pointe 41 years ago as a special education teacher at Monteith Elementary School, eventually working her way up to become the district’s longest-serving superintendent. The Family Center and the Rotary Club organized her farewell event and …

This was a warm reception for a friend to the GPPSS; Suzanne will be missed. The legacy that she leaves is precedent-setting. Not only does she put kids first, but she has recognized the value that the GPEA members bring to the community in being the first line in students' learning. While we joked about the $25 dessert items, we were comforted in knowing that even in a retirement parting gift, …   more ›

Details in Superintendent Contract Offer More Perspective, Comparison

The superintendent contract approved this week by the Grosse Pointe Public School Board is similar to the current superintendent's contract but does contain some differences.

The contract for incoming Grosse Pointe Public Schools Superintendent Thomas Harwood is very similar to what is contained in the contract for C. Suzanne Klein, members of the contract committee say. Earlier this week, the school board passed the contract in a 5-2 vote.  The five-page contract includes some alterations but is very similar, said Board President John Steininger, who believes it's a very fair contract the board may not have been able to achieve with any other candidate.  Harwood will earn a $174,802 annual salary—about $4,300 more than Klein made in 2010, according to a comparison between the contract and the district's list of employee pay. The contract takes effect Jan. 1 and continues through June 30, 2014, at which point …

It is unfortunate that Mr. Steininger has made the assumption that the other two final candidates would have wanted more than what was given to Mr. Harwood in his contract. I am sure that at least one of the candidates was attracted to the position because of the excellent opportunities that the district offers its students and the wonderful community itself. Money does not drive everyone's …   more ›

Grosse Pointe School Board Passes New Superintendent Contract

In a 5-2 vote, the school board approves a 2 1/2-year contract package nearing a $700,000 value for the district's next superintendent, Thomas Harwood.

A contract calling for the new superintendent, Thomas Harwood, to receive a package totaling near $700,000 over 2 1/2 years received approval Monday by the Grosse Pointe Public School Board—but not without questions.  All of the board members agreed they recognized and accepted that Harwood would be the next superintendnet of the district, and some even congratulated him—a noteable recognition after the contentious 4-3 split vote for him during the superintendent interviews earlier this summer.  Harwood will take over the role of superintendent in January after C. Suzanne Klein retires. Klein has been the district's superintendent for nearly 15 years and also was voted in on a 4-3 vote.  A contract negotiation committee made up of Brendan …

Grosse Pointe School Board Completes 3 of 5 Interviews

The remaining two candidates will be interviewed tonight and the board is expected to make a decision about who will return for a second interview.

The Grosse Pointe Public School board performed its first interviews Monday in the search for a new superintendent to replace C. Suzanne Klein, who is set to retire in December.  Public attendance was low during the Monday's round of interviews. A handful of people attended and most were familiar faces to the district.  Board members rotated turns asking a series of pre-determined questions. The first candidate to be interviewed came in from Pennsylvania Monday. Paul Long, superintendent for Pennsbury School District, offered a variety of examples during his interview from his current district, including some ways in which he's developed new sources of revenue. He also talked about offering a curriculum to each student that meets their …

Grosse Pointe Superintendent Interviews Begin Today

The Grosse Pointe Public School board will begin the interview process of five candidates selected by a search firm hired by the district.

Three of the five superintendent candidates revealed to the Grosse Pointe Public School Board last week will start the formal interview process today in Grosse Pointe South's auditorium beginning at 4:30 p.m. Board members agreed last week to a round-robin type of interview in which each member will ask a question and the next one will ask another question after the candidate has answered the first.  The interviews conducted this week will allow the board to eliminate candidates from the pool. The two or three selected for a second interview will do so July 11 and 12—an interview that is a daylong experience during which the candidate receives a tour of the district, interacts with the board members and will have the opportunity to …

Grosse Pointe School District Now Searching for 4 Top Administrators

Grosse Pointe Schools will be looking to fill three administrative vacancies within schools as well as the superintendent for next school year.

Following the quick exit by two former Grosse Pointe South administrators May 21 and the retirements of the Maire Elementary principal and the district superintendent, officials are preparing to find their replacements.  The district has already posted the Maire Elementary vacancy and received applications. The deadline for applications for that job has already passed and candidates are being interviewed, district spokeswoman Rebecca Fannon said.  The vacancies created by the weekend departures of Allan Diver and Brandon Slone—former principal and assistant principal of Grosse Pointe South—have not yet been posted on the district's website.  Both men resigned following an investigation that revealed inappropriate adult images on their …
