Grosse Pointe South Swim Team Performs Harlem Shake Underwater

The MAC Red Division champion Blue Devils performed the Internet dance craze as a morale booster for the team.

The Grosse Pointe South boys swimming and diving team showed off its version of the Harlem Shake on You Tube. The team offered a unique take on the viral Internet craze by performing the dance underwater. The video was posted to You Tube by ebgundy. Grosse Pointe South won the MAC Red Division dual-meet and division meet swimming championships this winter.

Grosse Pointe North Swims Past Ford

Danny MacAskill and Matt Leone each win two events for the Norsemen.

The following information was provided by Grosse Pointe North swimming coach Michael O’Connor. The Grosse Pointe North boys swimming and diving team defeated Henry Ford II Thursday night by a 118-63 margin. Grosse Pointe North had two double winners. Danny MacAskill took the 200- and 500-yard freestyle while Matt Leone scored wins in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke. Individual winners included Patrick Turnbull in the 200-yard individual medley, William McNelis in the 1-meter diving and Matt Stander in the 100 yard breaststroke. Wenger Sets Records for Grosse Pointe Gators

University Liggett student makes waves at swim meet at Indianapolis.

Alexis Wenger, a member of the Grosse Pointe Gators Swim Club, broke two meet records while competing for Team Michigan at the 2013 Mid-States 14 and under All-Star Championships on Jan. 5-6 at Indianapolis. Wenger recorded a time of of 1:06.87 in the 100 breaststroke to break a 10-year-old meet record, according to the Gators website. That time also broke a 20-year-old state record. In addition, Wenger won the 50 breaststroke in a meet-record time of 31.08 seconds. Wenger also helped the 11-12 year old girls 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay teams prevail in meet record times. Wenger is a student at University Liggett Middle School.

Grosse Pointe North Boys Swimming Drop to L'Anse Creuse

The Grosse Pointe North Boys Swimming and Diving Team dropped a  121.5 to 63.5 decision to L'Anse Creuse Tuesday night. Patrick Turnbull was North's sole first place winner taking the 100-yard freestyle. Season best performance werre recorded in the following events: 50-yard freestyle: Matt Stander 100-yard freestyle: Patrick Turnbull, A.J. Owens 200-yard freestyle: Danny MacAskill, Jacob Flowers 100-yard backstroke: Mathew Leone, Alex Owens, John Leone 100-yard breastroke: Matt Stander, John Hales, Michael Reith 100-yard butterfly: Michael Lemanske 200-yard individual medley: Alex Owens, John Leone 1-meter diving: William McNelis North is now 1-1 ( 0-0 MAC Red ) in dual meet competition.

Grosse Pointe North Swimmers Sweep Opponents

The Grosse Pointe North girls swimming and diving team defeated Dearborn and Livonia Franklin.

The following information was supplied by Grosse Pointe North swimming coach Michael O’Connor. The Grosse Pointe North girls swimming and diving team took both ends of a double dual meet against Dearborn and Livonia Franklin on Tuesday night. Grosse Pointe North defeated Dearborn by a 98-83 score and took Livonia Franklin by a 126-58 margin. Olivia Asimakis was a double winner for North taking both the 50 and 100 yard freestyle. Emily Griffith was victorious in the 1-meter diving event. Season-best performances were recorded in the following events: Grosse Pointe North is now 5-3 (0-2 MAC Red) in dual meet competition.

Grosse Pointe North Swimmers Prevail Over Ford

Emma Matthews wins two events to lead the Grosse Pointe North girls swimming and diving team.

The following information was provided by Grosse Pointe North swimming coach Michael O’Connor. The Grosse Pointe North girls swimming and diving team defeated Sterling Heights Henry Ford II Thursday night by a 111-65 margin. Emma Mathews was a double winner for Grosse Pointe North taking both the 50 and 100 yard freestyle. Single winners for North were: Emily Griffith in the 1 meter diving, Olivia Asimakis in the 100 yard backstroke and Katelyn Kohler in the 100 yard breaststroke. In a closely contested race in the 100 yard butterfly freshman Olivia Asimakis finished in second place with a Division 2 state championship qualifying time. The following information was provided by Grosse Pointe North girls swimming and diving coach Michael O'Connor. The Grosse Pointe North girls swimming and diving team dropped a close 98-87 decision to Dakota on Tuesday night. North event winners included Kayleigh Gehlert (200 yard individual medley), Emma Mathews (100 yard freestyle), and Olivia Asimakis (100 yard backstroke). Season best performances were recorded in the following events: North is now 1-3 (0-2 MAC Red) in dual meet competition.

Grosse Pointe Park Woman's Team Swims English Channel in World Record Time

A six-woman relay team, including Grosse Pointe Park resident Emily Kreger, swam the English Channel last week in 18 hours and 55 minutes, breaking the world record previously held by a team from Mexico.

While the world watched the opening of the 2012 London Olympics, six metro Detroit women, including a Wyandotte native, were achieving their own feat across the pond – breaking the world record for swimming the English Channel. Amanda Mercer, Bethany Williston, Jenny Sutton Jalet, Emily Kreger, Susan Butcher and Melissa Karjala swam the English Channel from England to France and back on Friday in 18 hours and 55 minutes, four minutes better than the time previously recorded by a team from Mexico. Kreger, who's originally from Wyandotte and now lives in Grosse Pointe Park, and her team were inspired to swim the Channel not for athletic glory, but to raise money and awareness of Lou Gehrig's disease, by which all had been touched. Grosse Pointe South's Jackson Swims to State Title

Patrick Jackson of Grosse Pointe South won the state championship in the 100-yard butterfly at the Division 2 finals.

Patrick Jackson of Grosse Pointe South won the state championship in the 100-yard butterfly at the Division 2 swimming and diving finals on Saturday at Holland. Jackson posted a winning time of 51.75 seconds. He also finished ninth in the 100 backstroke (54.27). In the team competition, Grosse Pointe South finished eighth with 101 points, and Grosse Pointe North placed ninth with 96 points. Dexter won the state championship with 320 points. Several other swimmers from Grosse Pointe South and Grosse Pointe North placed in the top 16 at the Division 2 finals. Relay teams from both schools also performed well.
