Grosse Pointe South Runners Set Pace at National Meet

Kelsie Schwartz, Ersula Farrow, Haley Meier and Hannah Meier won the 4x1-mile relay at the New Balance Indoor Nationals at Columbia University in New York

Grosse Pointe South athletes Kelsie Schwartz, Ersula Farrow, Haley Meier and Hannah Meier recently won the 4x1-mile relay at the New Balance Indoor Nationals at Columbia University in New York. Their winning time of 20 minutes, 2 seconds was the fastest recorded in the country this year and the third-fastest in history, according to an email from Grosse Pointe South coach Steve Zaranek. The national record is 19:59. Schwartz, Farrow, Haley Meier and Hannah Meier also won the event at the meet last year. They competed as part of the Grosse Pointe Track Club. Grosse Pointe South's Hannah Meier Runs Past National Field

Blue Devils star runner posts fastest time in the nation this year in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:07 at the Brooks PR 2013 in Seattle.

Hannah Meier made quick work of the competition at the Brooks PR Invitational 2013 on Sunday, Feb. 24, in Seattle. Meier, a student at Grosse Pointe South, prevailed in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:07—the fastest in the nation by a high school athlete this season. Here's a sampling of the reaction on Twitter to Meier's victory. Meier has excelled throughout her high school career at Grosse Pointe South. She won two state titles at the track and field finals in 2011, and she—along with sister Haley Meier—helped the Blue Devils win state track and field team championships in 2011 and 2012.

STATE CHAMPS: Grosse Pointe South Wins Girls Track Crown

The Grosse Pointe South girls track and field team repeated as Division 1 state champions.

For the second straight year, the Grosse Pointe South girls track and field team won the Division 1 state championship. Grosse Pointe South finished first at the state meet in East Kentwood on Saturday. In doing so, the Blue Devils’ 3200-meter relay team also set a national record with a time of eight minutes, 48.29 seconds, according to MLive. The Blue Devils also won the state championship in 2011. Grosse Pointe South Girls Track Team Takes Regional Title

The Grosse Pointe South girls track and field team won a regional championship for the 17th time in the past 20 years.

The following information was reported by Grosse Pointe South track and field coach Steve Zaranek. Twenty five of Blue Devils’ 120 member team competed on the Grosse Pointe South track this past Friday and led the team to a dominant state regional title. It was South's 17th regional championship of the past 20 years. The South girls completed dominated the field, including Cass Tech - last year’s state Division 1 runner-up to the Blue Devils.  The South girls pulled off a rare feat - placing in all 17 events.  Twelve were crowned regional champions - a record number for South and the highest in the state. South accumulated 225 points - 143 point more than their nearest competitor (Grosse Pointe North with 82). Rounding out the top five …

Grosse Pointe South Track Wins Invitational at Sterling Heights

The Grosse Pointe South girls track and field team won the Sterling Heights Invitational and set several meet records, according to Coach Steve Zaranek.

The following information was submitted by Grosse Pointe South track coach Steve Zaranek. The South girls track team dominated the 15-team Sterling Heights Invitational over the weekend. Meet records were set across the board including Hannah Meier in both the mile and half mile, the sprint relay team of Mia Perkins, Cierra Rice, Andrea DiCresce and Caitlin Moore, the 1600 relay team of Kelsie Schwartz, Ersula Farrow, Haley Meier and Hannah Meier, and a meet record for the most points ever scored by one team.  South scored 162 points. Also in the top five were Dakota at 80, Troy at 50, Romeo at 47 and Regina at 37. The Grosse Pointe South girls track and field team won the Division 1 state championship on Saturday.

The Grosse Pointe South girls track and field team won the Division 1 state finals on Saturday at Rockford. Hannah Meier won the 800- and 1,600-meter run at the finals. Meier has the top time in the 800 (2:07.37) and 1,600 run (4:42.60) of any sophomore in the nation, according to DyeStat.com. Photos were taken by Dana Kaiser.

Grosse Pointe South's Hannah Meier Wins Two State Titles

Grosse Pointe South sophomore prevails in two events at Division 1 state track and field finals.

Grosse Pointe South sophomore Hannah Meier claimed two state championships at the Division 1 track and field finals at Rockford on Saturday. Meier won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:07.37, and she prevailed in the 1,600 run in 4:42.60. Both were meet records. Haley Meier finished second in the 1,600 run, and she finished third in the 800 run. This story was corrected at 10:14 p.m. Saturday, June 4.

Mattison Smashes South's 400 Dash Record

Grosse Pointe South track star sets new school record in 400-meter dash in dramatic fashion.

Victor Mattison not only broke a school record on May 10, he smashed it in dramatic fashion. The Grosse Pointe South track star set a new 400-meter dash school record in a showdown against a Utica runner. Mattison fought off a final charge down the stretch and both runners finished with a time of 48.9. The Utica runner also broke his school record with the same time. "Victor is a determined student and athlete," Grosse Pointe track coach Werner Schienke said. "He sets goals and works toward them. Failure is not an option in his thinking. He is teachable, coachable and willing to think through and discuss the advice offered. He's ready for life. What more could you ask for?"

Lady Blue Devils Capture Regional Crown

Grosse Pointe South dominates regional competition to head to state finals June 4 at Rockford High.

The Lady Blue Devils from Grosse Pointe South captured one of track and field's most prestigious titles Friday afternoon in front of their home fans—a regional championship. The title propels the squad into the state finals June 4 at Rockford High School. Strong performances were turned in by the entire squad, en route to the victory.  Grosse Pointe North finished the day in fourth place, while the remaining local squad, Lakeview, wound up in third place.
