16 Schools in Grosse Pointe Earn Green Status

Michigan Green Schools awarded 16 buildings in the Grosse Pointes the Green School designation for 2012. All of the schools have been recognized for multiple years.

Most schools in the Grosse Pointes are making efforts to be environmentally friendly, according to the recent list of those designated "green" for the 2011/2012 school year by Michigan Green Schools. In Grosse Pointe, most of the public schools earned the status as well as University Liggett School and the Grosse Pointe Academy. The schools must earn at least 10 of 20 possible points to receive the Green School status and are given a level based on their point value. The levels are identified by different shades of green. Points are earned by having a recycling program for bottles, paper and other materials, such as old cell phones and electronics; using alternative energy; incorporating environmentally resposible behavior into curriculum…

University Liggett Student to Take Part in NASA Program

Tori Wuthrich will spend a week at the Johnson Space Center in Houston.

Far out. That’s the news for University Liggett student Tori Wuthrich, who will spend a week this summer at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. Wuthrich, a Grosse Pointe Woods resident, will be one of 80 girls nationwide to take part in STEM, a program where students will work alongside female NASA engineers and interns to design a mission to Mars. Wuthrich applied for the program after hearing about it from teachers Kim Galea and Andrea Champagne. Wuthrich applied and was accepted into the first part of the program, which included assignments in math and space exploration. She was then accepted into the second part of the program at the Johnson Space Center based on her performance in the first part. “I thought that even if I wasn’t …

Grosse Pointe Students Among WXYZ's Brightest and Best

WXYZ-TV's 33-year tradition of honoring Metro Detroit's top high school students continues with several from Grosse Pointe schools.

Channel 7, WXYZ recently honored the 256 recipients of this year's "Brightest and Best" award with a special luncheon at the station in Southfield. Among the winners for 2012, the 33rd year of program, were three from Grosse Pointe schools. The station teamed up with Gardner-White Furniture this year to present the Brightest and Best Essay Contest. One lucky student that submits a 500-word essay on how to move Michigan forward by retaining college graduates to work and live in Michigan will receive a $5,000 scholarship. Grosse Pointe University Liggett Loses to Morley-Stanwood in State Finals

Despite 42 points from Madison Ristovski, University Liggett lost 61-57 to Morley-Stanwood in the Class C girls basketball state championship game on Saturday.

University Liggett’s girls basketball team lost to Morley-Stanwood 61-57 in the Class C state championship game on Saturday in the Breslin Center at East Lansing. Madison Ristovski, who earlier this week was named Michigan’s Miss Basketball by the Detroit Free Press, scored 42 points for University Liggett. Update: Grosse Pointe University Liggett Defeats Concord in State Semifinals

With the victory, University Liggett advances to the Class C high school girls basketball state championship on Saturday at 4 p.m. in the Breslin Center.

University Liggett is one step away from a girls basketball state championship. The Knights defeated Concord 49-27 in the Class C state semifinals on Thursday at the Breslin Center in East Lansing, according to mhsaa.com. Haleigh Ristovski scored 22 points for University Liggett, according to a story on the MHSAA's Second Half website. With the victory, University Liggett improved its record to 23-4 overall and advanced to the Class C state championship game. The Knights will play undefeated Morley Stanwood for the state title on Saturday at 4 p.m. in the Breslin Center. Tickets to the state championship game are $8. The University Liggett girls basketball team will take on undefeated Concord in the Class C state semifinals Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Breslin Center in East Lansing. Liggett, which advanced to the state championship game last year, enters the game with 22-4 overall record. Concord is 26-0. Tickets for the game are $8. The game will be shown live online at MHSAA.tv and FoxSportsDetroit.com. The winner of Thursday’s game will play in the Class C state championship game on Saturday at 4 p.m.

Grosse Pointe South, University Liggett Advance to State Girls Basketball Semifinals

Grosse Pointe South and University Liggett both win state quarterfinal games in the girls basketball tournament.

The girls basketball teams from Grosse Pointe South and University Liggett both celebrated big victories Tuesday night in the state playoffs—and both are headed to the state semifinals later this week in East Lansing. Grosse Pointe South defeated Waterford Kettering 58-54 in a Class A state quarterfinal game at Detroit Mercy on Tuesday. Caitlin Moore scored 19 points for South, according to a column by Terry Foster of the Detroit News. With the victory, Grosse Pointe South improved its overall record to 22-3.
