Sentencing in Bashara Homicide Re-Scheduled

The handyman who pleaded guilty in the January 2012 strangulation death of Jane E. Bashara will be sentenced March 1 rather than Jan. 29 after the judge re-scheduled the hearing.

Wayne Circuit Court Judge Vonda Evans continued the sentencing hearing for Joe Gentz originally scheduled to happen next week until early March, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office. Gentz, who pled guilty to second degree murder in the January 2012 strangulation death of Jane E. Bashara, will be sentenced March 1. He was originally scheduled to go before Evans Jan. 29. Wayne County Prosecutor's spokeswoman Maria Miller noted the change in the sentencing date in an email case update Thursday afternoon. According to the update, Evans notified Gentz's defense attorney as well as the prosecutors handling the case of the change in the hearing. Gentz remains in custody. Gentz Trial Set for January 7

Joe Gentz, accused of conspiracy and the murder of Jane Bashara, pleaded not guilty in Wayne County Third Circuit Court on Tuesday

The trial of Joe Gentz, the handyman charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder in the strangulation death of Grosse Pointe Park resident Jane Bashara, is set for January 7, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office.  The trial is scheduled nearly a year after Jane Bashara was found strangled in her SUV in Detroit last January. Gentz was arraigned on the charges of murder and conspiracy in Wayne County Third Circuit Court on Tuesday morning.  According to an article in the Detroit Free Press, Gentz entered a not guilty plea.  If convicted, Gentz is facing up to life in prison on both of the charges.
