The Grosse Pointe North band and orchestra students performed at Disney earlier this month during a weekend long festival featuring high school musicians from around the country.
Grosse Pointe North's band and orchestra musicians performed on the streets of Disney earlier this month as part of a weekend-long festival, earning excellent and superior ratings, according to David Cleveland, the director of insturmental music. The group included nearly 130 students performed six concerts during the three day trip. Their performances began Thursday April 11 in downtown Disney and concluded Saturday April 13 at Festival Disney with thousands of student musicians from across the country, according to Cleveland. North's Concert Band and the full North Orchestra earned excellent ratings from the panel of judges. The symphony band earned a superior rating--the highest rating available in the festival--from the judges. …

A problem-based project completed by Grosse Pointe North High School students featured 59 boats Monday during the third annual Cardboard Regatta in the pool.
The Cardboard Regatta at Grosse Pointe North High School has quickly become a tradition. In its third year, the 17 heats featured 59 boats and about 300 students, teacher Gary Abud said. It draws a student and faculty audience as well that fills the stands at the school's indoor pool, complete with Thor, the school's mascot. This year, newly appointed Principal Kate Murray was the emcee for the event, providing direction, encouragement and rousing the crowd here and there. Abud, a physics teacher, began the project after reading about it. Although it had never been used in the Pointes, it was a common project in other school districts throughout the country. The Education Nation bus parked in front of Grosse Pointe North High School Monday as part of its tour of Michigan, helping raise awareness about issues in education both at the student and teacher levels.
The large blue tour bus parked outside of Grosse Pointe North High School Monday was a stark contrast to the brown brick building. The bus allowed NBC to feature some the district's teachers for an upcoming week of education focused programming for the network called Education Nation. Teachers were interviewed about "what's right with education," according to an email from district spokeswoman Rebecca Fannon. In addition to the bus being used for the interviews, it also served as drop off location for a book fundraiser to benefit United Way and low income schools. After gaining official approval earlier this week, Kate Murray will take over being the principal at Grosse Pointe North High School.
Assistant Principal Kate Murray is taking over Grosse Pointe North as its principal this week after she gained official approval from the school board. Murray has been at North for a number of years. She began there as a student teacher and essentially never left. She remained teaching in the classroom until last school year when she accepted the assistant prinicpal position. Now she's taking over the helm. She replaces the interim principal, Tom Tobe, who was hired earlier this school year to fill in while the district continued its search for the right candidate. A championship swim meet ended with Grosse Pointe North Boys Swimming and Diving Team taking fifth place.
By Michael O'Connor, North Boys Swimming and Diving Coach The Grosse Pointe North Boys Swimming and Diving Team finished in fifth place in the Macomb Area Conference Red Division Swimming and Diving Championship at Chippewa Valley. The competition was Thursday through Saturday. Individual point scorers for North included: Matthew Leone established a Division 2 state qualifying time with his 2nd place finish in the 100 yard backstroke. Duncan MacAskill and William McNelis have qualified for the D2 Diving Regionals to be held at Birmingham Groves March 5. Season best performances were recorded in the following events:

One of Grosse Pointe North's assistant principals could be leading the school as its next principal by Feb. 26 if the Board of Education approves her at their next meeting.
After two searches for a principal to lead Grosse Pointe North High School, district officials will recommend Assistant Principal Kate Murray to the Board of Education later this month. Murray began at Grosse Pointe North as a student teacher more than 15 years ago. She then accepted a teaching job at the school and has remained there throughout her professional career. Last school year, she was promoted to assistant principal. Now, a year-and-a-half later, she will be considered by the school board to take on an even bigger challenge as the high school's principal, according to Rebecca Fannon, the district spokeswoman. Mrs. Murray received a standing ovation after the Board of Education approved hiring her as the new principal at Grosse Pointe North. I have seen eight other administrators hired included a superintendent, deputy superintendent, directors, principals etc and no one has received a standing ovation. Season best performances were recorded in the following events: North is now 4-7 (0-4 MAC Red) in dual meet competition.

By Michael O'Connor, Grosse Pointe North Boys Swimming and Diving Coach The Grosse Pointe North Swimming and Dving Team defeated Livonia Franklin Tuesday by a 114-55 score. Danny MacAskill and Patrick Turnbull were double winners for North. MacAskill took the 200 and 500 yard freestyle events, while Turnbull notched victories in the 200 yard individual medley and the 100 yard freestyle. Scoring single wins were Anthony Cafagna in the 100 yard butterfly and Matthew Leone in the 100 yard backstroke. Season best performances were recorded in the following events: North is now 4-6 (0-4 MAC Red) in dual meet competition.

North had two inidividual winners: Danny MacAskill took the 500 yard freestyle while William NcNelis was victorious in the 1 meter diving.
