Henry Ford, Beaumont Merger Called Off Due to 'Two Very Different Perspectives'

Henry Ford board members voted against the multi-billion-dollar deal Tuesday afternoon.

The Beaumont and Henry Ford health systems merger has been called off after "different perspectives" emerged about the $6.4-billion deal. Henry Ford board of trustees' decision Tuesday followed six months of due diligence discussions involving hundreds of Beaumont and Henry Ford team members, according to Beaumont. “We have benefited greatly from our merger discussions and have great respect for our colleagues at Henry Ford,” said Gene Michalski, president and CEO, Beaumont Health System. “However, we found through our discussions that we are not aligned on how to achieve our vision for a model health system due to differences in our structures and business models.” In a letter to employees, Henry Ford CEO Nancy Schlichting wrote the …

I am glad they are not merging. Beaumont evolved from a great community hospital to a world-class health care facility. Henry Ford has great facilites and doctors also; but a merger of the two would prove too large and unweildy a governance structure in my opinion.   more ›

Would love to have been the fly on the wall, I suspect Beaumont turned out a little too top heavy in liabilities, eg only a C+ in patient safety in Royal Oak, Troy has a B. I have personal reasons not to go back to Beaumont for any emergency. They do have excellent doctors and quite a few great nurses (if you can get a hold of one). Beaumont is a prime example of what happens when accountants …   more ›

Dozens of people – including children – were killed when a massive tornado Monday afternoon ripped through the town of Moore, Okla., a suburb of Oklahoma City, according to the Associated Press. As search-and-rescue crews continue to dig through the rubble, many people are wondering what they can do to help those affected by the disaster. "We're still in the assessment phase of what's going on in Oklahoma with our disaster assessment professionals," he said. "You see the photos of the devastation and it's just horrific, and the people in the town have lost everything." …

Retired Harper Woods Fire Chief Joins Grosse Pointe Shores Public Safety

Sean Gunnery is nearly finished with his field training in Grosse Pointe Shores. He started with the public safety department in April after retiring from Harper Woods in March.

The former Harper Woods Fire Chief recently joined the public safety department of Grosse Pointe Shores.  Sean Gunnery, 47, of Richmond, retired from Harper Woods Fire Department in March after eight years as the chief. He worked for the department for 21 years, slowly working his way up to chief, he said. Several changes in the past few years changed Gunnery's job in Harper Woods significantly. Just about a year ago, the city laid off several firefighters in a department that was already dwindling. The city had wanted to switch to a public safety model rather than maintain separate police and fire departments. The union fought it and gained a court injunction to stop the transition.  Gunnery completed the police academy in 2010 in …
