ReplyTeens do stupid things; it's their nature. Neuroscience has proven the brains ability to truly understand consequences of our actions is not fully developed until one's early 20's. It's why we all did stupid things as teens. Unfortunately, this bad choice must be taken seriously - what a way to learn a lesson.

ReplyThank you for your perspective on this issue. I like the idea of more opportunity in arts/electives. I worry about the kids that have difficulty focusing during longer class periods, but project-based learning would be beneficial in many ways. (It's not the same as listening to a 90 minute lecture.) The variety created by A/B days would make school more interesting, and more like a college schedule (easier transitioning.)
I also heartily agree we need to lessen the homework & stress for students. My 5th grader already has too much homework - although some of that is due to his taking an extra class at the middle school on top of his regular load. Anything we can do to make learning interesting & less stressful would ultimately be a good thing.
