Calling All Beer and Wine Enthusiasts: Come Partake in Upcoming Classes at the War Memorial

It doesn't matter whether you've got a preference for grapes or an appreciation for hops, come expand your knowledge of beer and wine next weekend at the Grosse Pointe War Memorial.

During two exclusive events, you'll take a culinary journey through the land of drink - and probably expand your taste buds as well.

Sure, once the class of your choice is over, you might be referred to as a "snob", but we prefer the terms "aficionado" and "fanatic".

The events will be hosted by Chicago-based Plum Market Certified Sommelier Anthony Minne, who has prepared tastings and classes at the War Memorial for years.

First up, if you're interested in exploring the wide world of beer, check out Beer Tasting: Hops - India Pale Ales and Beyond which will be held Aug. 2 from 7:30-9:30 p.m. During the event, Minne will discuss the ways in which classic style ales around the world are produced from different hops varieties. The War Memorial encourages home brewers and chefs, as well as general beer lovers to participate. The cost is $30 per person. Depending on the weather, the class is scheduled to take place on the outside terrace.

For all the "winers", Italian Wines 101 is happening the following evening, Aug. 3 , at 7 p.m. During the two-hour class, Minne will showcase Italian wines, four reds and two whites, from the regions of Tuscany, Piedmont and Vento. Attendees will learn how to dissect a wine label, identify the grape varietals of the regions as well as discover how to correctly pair wine with food. This class is ideal for seasoned professionals to wine enthusiasts with little or no prior knowledge. The cost is $45 per person.

"It's just a very enjoyable evening out where you can come with a friend or with a partner, and it's just a great way to spend a Friday or Saturday night," said War Memorial Programming Coordinator Tami O'Shea, of the weekend festivities.

During both classes, light snacks will be provided to help cleanse tasters' palettes.

According to O'Shea, Minne has built up quite a following over the years, therefore, classes are expected to fill up, and early registration is crucial.
