There are four categories for the Pointer of Distinction Awards: youth achievement, new business enterprise, community service, and excellence in business.

Applicants for Pointer of Distinction were asked to explain in writing “an example of a problem solved, project completed, product produced, business expanded or job saved.”

Boettcher said this is the fifth year for honoring Pointers who have bettered the community through their businesses, civic, and community involvement.

When I asked Mary Jo Harris of the chamber in a phone interview if the field of applicants was public knowledge she said, “The applications went straight to the judges. I don’t even know how many are in the field.”

This year the chamber is honoring several Grosse Pointe students.

In this field, Harris had more information to share.

“Apparently the youth achievement field was filled with so many talented applications that the judges have selected three students as Pointers of Distinction,” Harris said.

The judging panel consists of five judges: Chairman Shane Reeside, the  City Manager; Vice Chairwoman Vickey Bloom, from the ;  Gary Grybranceleone , of JP Morgan Private Wealth Management; Ed Lazar, of State Farm Insurance; and Al Fincham, the  City Administrator.
